THR / metalossis/ hamstring tear

Posted by minajo @minajo, May 2 3:20pm

Hi, I have 17 yr THR on right, cobalt/ chromium 9/ 5 respectively but been told my pain dictates revisions
Do labs, thyroid etc regularly, echo, retinal checks, am 77 so fatigue part of aging too
Recently saw PA as top of posterior right hip uncomfortable to sit etc but walk 2 1/2 -3 miles day 6x week , mild discomfort after
Had MRI and showed 18mm grade 2 hamstring tear at ischial tuberosity near sit bone so know where pain coming from
Question, IF I need surgery for hamstring will it affect doing revision of hip? Can I heal hamstring with PT ?
I actually only felt pain when I turned over in bed, pretty severe but subsided, next morning back to walking okay
I am a caregiver to disabled adult daughter and husband has cancer so surgery for either is almost out of question but now that I know about hamstring, I'm scared to overdue walking etc but need exercise, don't like machines but will use if it won't damage hamstring more, I'm pretty close to grade 3 which is a complete tear off pelvic bone so darn scary!!

@minajo The question of managing both the hamstring tear and revision on the hip is best answered by your orthopedic surgeon.

As for the hamstring injury, a grade 2 tear, or partial tear, is generally treated with RICE (rest, ice, compression & elevation) followed by physical therapy.

Good morning.
I had a partial hamstring tear. I do not have your hip situation and so will speak only about the hamstring tear.
Sue is also right- consult with the surgeons. You might have one who specializes in the hamstring repair, another on revisions. Don't be afraid to ask!

I had a partial hamstring tear that was repaired (removed and debridement) with an anchor placement and sutures that are permanent. More important: I was allowed to be mobile as long as I followed the recommendations to limit weight bearing on the leg until the repair was healed and I was given the ok.

This is where you ask questions! If you don't repair the hamstring, what is the likelihood that it will progress to a higher grade? If it is a real possibility, you might want to consider getting the repair. If you have a complete tear, the recovery may be significantly more demanding and put you out of commission. You won't be able to do anything for any family member! Recovery time may be far longer. (I would not rule out the hip repair either- if it is a quality of life-health issue.)

Reach out for the resources that you don't know about... ask the surgeons for referral to social worker. If you need to be out of commission to take care of you-then your family members should be engaged and involved and getting/participating in your care so you can heal and be the continued anchor of support for your family.

You Matter!

Best to you.

Such a great reply! Thank you!
I have been with a excellent PA, who works under chief of orthopedics who did both my hip implants
He has reviewed MRI, is suggesting I do pt, can't do PRP as provider has left and I can't afford out of pocket..
But since I was unaware my fall in December most likely caused tear, after a few days of rest, little walking outdoors which has always been my #1 choice( 2 1/2-3 miles moderate pace for months and good weight loss, 25#,aic back to normal) I started short walks, did holidays, following months did daily walks,
Did notice my right upper hip bit uncomfortable when sitting but attributed to implant which was a possible revision but metalossis never caused surgeon to get it done immediately, just said don't go by numbers but pain
So now with recent hamstring injury I know surgery can probably be done with the excellent surgeon but it's the long rehab, will hamstring issue cause more complicated surgery than I have now and can handle ,Aleve maybe 3x week
So lots to discuss with PA next week at appt but starting PT this week. Also my PT has worked on my shoulder tear, knee meniscus etc so I know she's very good..
Looking for a PT who does pool therapy tho.. my first love!
Side note,we do have positive genetic gene for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, daughter has, uses wheelchair, obviously passed from me..another complicated condition!!
Thank you again for great reply?

I am an exercise physiologist and industrial engineer. If you have access to and can get in, use the pool. Walk, strength without water weights, do many of the on land movement in the water. Something is better than nothing!
