Nanoknee, is it better or merely hype?
Unfortunately, I have been diagnosed with arthritus in my left knee and told that it will eventually need a TKR. I have a friend who has had both knees replaced and heard horror stories about how painful it is. Searching the web I found a site (nanoknee.com) that claims that there knee replacement method is faster, better and less painful. Is this true? It seems that if it were better it would be used more often than titanium replacements. Supposedly it has been used for 10 years so there must be patients who have undergone it. Any advice would be helpful.

@dbobinaz Thank you so much for all the info you shared. The husband of a friend who lives in Tucson was planning to have TKR. She told me about Jiffy Knee which her hubby was going to investigate. He has put surgery on the back burner.
I am thinking about doing a virtual consult with Dr. Patel, the inventor, if he does such consults. I always want to get as much info as possible when making such a decision.
I had a THA, anterior approach, in 3/23. I watched a video of the procedure a million times so I knew what to expect, followed post op guidelines and got back to all my activities. My surgeon wasn’t enthusiastic about returning to run but I was careful and did more on the treadmill than roads.
So I will finish my gel
Jabs, continue maintenance PT and investigate JK.
Thanks again for being so generous with helpful info.
Thank you!
Going to see if he does virtual consultations. Thank you!!
@crankyknee you’re very welcome! Good luck with your decision!
@dbobinaz I also live in WNY and am so surprised that as good as our specialists are in Buffalo, I can not find a single surgeon who performs Jiffy Knee. The closest I found was in Findlay, Ohio, where I have family. I also have family in Phoenix, which may be another option, but obviously involve travel cost. I'm still doing research on surgeons. I'm surprised that the Cleveland Clinic does not offer the JK. Which makes me suspicious about the procedure. I am 74, have had a reverse TSR and hip replacement. Recently had steriod injection in left knee and Synvisc-One gel injection with some relief & improvement. I still need to wear a brace & cane to feel secure if walking any distance. Upcoming trip to SF and Redwoods in September so ruling out any surgery until after, due to recovery time. It's good to know that Medicare does cover it. I have United Healthcare for supplemental so I'm skeptical if it would pick up the remainder. I will join the FB support group. Thanks again for sharing your experience!
@crankyknee
HSS is great. They don't do Jiffy Knee but they do do subvastus and midvastus methods. IMO Jiffy and Nano are just marketing.

1 Reaction@beachy the redwoods in September will be a lovely time. Enjoy that!
Would Dr. John Sullivan in New Hartford New York be an option for you? You could at least get a consult. You could also look into a good ortho nearby who does subvastus surgery. It’s not quite as easy on soft tissue, which really helps with pain, but it’s a good option if no others work for you. I hope you find that Facebook group helpful and informative in deciding whether it’s worth finding a JK surgeon.

1 Reaction@dbobinaz ty for info. I'll definitely check him out! I requested to join that FB group but no response yet. Looking forward to the Redwoods especially!
@steveinarizona I play at Capital Canyon Club up in Prescott. I also belong to a ladies group out at Antelope Hills. Great bunch!
Hi Steve,
Thanks for your message. I did some googling about why HSS doesn’t offer Jiffy or Nano. The answer was these are “trademarked” names that describe muscle sparing approaches. Surgeons at HSS do muscle sparing procedures but don’t reference them as Jiffy or Nano. I worked at HSS and understand the culture.
The surgeon I get gel jabs from plays tennis so he gets that I want to be moving on the tennis court versus having a pro feed me balls. I can play golf because I don’t pivot in my cranky knee.
If I get to the pint where I believe TKR is my next best step, I will have an appt and at least 20 questions. Thanks again Steve!!
