@pattwc exactly! I've been researching foods good for osteoporosis and other things such as supplements. I read that with fosamax, you need to get off the med after 2 years and have a break from it before starting it again. How can that be something good to use? I don't understand these meds at all. Seems lots of them just end up creating other problems which then needs another med to take. It's very frustrating!

@gen55 Yes, agree 100 percent. The meds just sounded awful and I just couldn't see taking them. Very frustrating indeed!

Headache 1st day. Feel weird for 3 to 4 days . I take 1 dose a week.. Face flushes dryness, and face breaks out
I drink tons of water to help. Now cramps in my leg, sometimes but I don't know if it's calcium low or potassium?

@dukemayo magnesium, vit D, calcium, potassium and sodium is needed for leg cramps.
Potassium to.magnesium ratio is 10 to 1 respectively.

@gen55 I was on Fosomax from 2016 to 2019. Had to stop due to gut issues. Years ago read that bisphosphonates take good bone cells from the femur to nourish the hips and pelvic region. I broke my femur Jan 2026. That's my experience. I still have ongoing gut issues.

I have had my share of negatives while on Fosamax. I have IBS and Fosamax has made my intestinal issues a lot more sensitive than before taking this medication. I have learned what I can and cannot tolerate while on Fosamax and avoid those foods. Usually I am very tired the day I take the dose but feel better the next day. Here is my dilemma. I already have had a year on Evenity and needed a new med after the 12 month course. After learning about possible side effects of Prolia and Reclast, I just could not take the chance. I am 75 years old and am afraid my remaining years could be devastating with the possible side effects of these drugs that stay in your system for an extended period of time. At least with Fosamax, you can stop the drug at any time. I am not thrilled with Fosamax but the way I see it, all osteoporosis drugs have theirs cons so which of all these is best for your situation? Too bad a safer medication with less severe possible side effects is not available.

@susanew I was on Fosamax for 5 years. Well, then it was determined following a scan that I had osteoporosis in my right hip!? I didn’t suffer from any side effects during that time, however, it apparently didn’t have the hoped for results. I am now in month two of Evenity injections for 12 months. The side effects suck - fatigue, joint and muscle pain. I see my endocrinologist this month. We shall see.

I was on Evenity before this. Minimal side effects. But Evenity is only good to take for a year. So I had to choose the best of the worst for my situation 😔

After reading the risks: NO THANK YOU.
I am concerned about the provider not going over any of the lab work, risk factors, diet, lifestyle that all contribute.

@inlimbo reading your post raises this thought: Are you looking at the balance and absorption of nutrients? Also, if you consume alcohol, that adds to the problems related to bone health. Any alcohol! (Yikes!) There are many factors to look at that may include medications. Medications should not be the first course of action. Fosomax takes calcium out of bone to put it somewhere else does not address why the body is not producing/eliminating bone material (osteoblasts and osteoclasts).
