Weight lifting - bone scans improved in one year!

Posted by vga @vga, Apr 21 6:47pm

I'm a 62-year-old woman, average weight, healthy eater, and a runner. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis last year with my first bone scan. I tried one dose of oral Fosamax--it made me terribly sick--so I stopped immediately. I researched alternatives, adding Vitamin K2 and D to my supplements, and started weight lifting with heavy weights 5-6 times a week. I researched specific osteroporosis weight lifting programs, but couldn't find a coach nearby. So, I just started using youtube videos and lifting heavy weights. I just had a repeat bone scan that showed improvement in all my numbers--moving osteoporosis to osteopenia for some locations. My worst area is my L3--this improved by 30%! In one year! Very excited to share this. I hope that sharing my results might encourage others to try weight lifing.

@pamelacuming Not the author responding but i too had tried a bone drug and got off it because of the side effects. I started weight lifting and in a year and a half got out of osteoporosis and into osteopenia! My doctor was very impressed and said it was a direct result of the weights. I found the back exercise that worked most for me was the one where you lean over a padded stand and raise your back up from leaning over it. I added a 25 lb weight I cradle to my chest as I do back raises. This has strengthened my back so much and improved the density. I also lift pretty heavy kettle bells in a dead lift from floor twist and also do swings with them. for hips I find the leg press to be very effective as you press pretty hard from the hips as you press the plate away from your body. I am convinced weight lifting plus supplements changed my situation.

I’m at the beginning of this OP situation and challenge. I still need to find a trainer if anyone has suggestions for online workout for weight lifting I’m all ears. No bone drugs for me. My twin sister just had Reclast infusion. I’m in worse shape dexa but not ok with the risks involved. Have a lot of work to do exercise wise. And am on it. Healthy otherwise.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Any thoughts to share about AlgeaCal??

I was thinking how my sister uses a small trampoline to bounce each day, thereby helping her lymphatic system drain more effectively. I found this article that considers jumping, in general, as another alternative to improve bone health:

(Obviously, I’d obtain guidance from PT’s or PCP’s and proceed cautiously).

At 66, I also started jumping rope. Used to be a “pro” at recess doing all the tricks when younger. Now it’s hilarious just trying not to trip up with every revolution.
🤔Interestingly enough, I have this same problem with putting under undergarments on - TMI - So fun getting old 😂)

Good to know I'm not the only one having to hold on to a chair to get my undergarments up, and on safely! That made me chuckle, although really not funny. The best to you and all.

@humphreysbr
Wow that's great! Congrats!
Weight of kettle bells? And would you mind sharing your age and what your spine DEXA was while osteoporotic? No worries if don't want to share. Just trying to put things in prospective for myself. I'm 71 with -3.2 in spine. Thanks!

@chofeldt I have a question. Did you take Collagen? If so what did you take? I have been doing some research on it but it is hard to tell what is best. AI said that a collagen called Fortibone was best for bone structural integrity by stimulating bone-forming cells and reducing bone breakdown, aiding in increased bone density.

@chofeldt I am taking Algaecal collagen highly recommended. Have verisol forty one and fortified UC-II

So happy for you. I'm doing a Liftmor program at a rehab PT facility near me but haven't had another scan (too soon) Another woman came up to me who was also doing it said the same thing, doing it here and at home she went from osteoporosis to osteopenia and wouldn't go on meds. Lots of hard work but it pays off many times.
Keep up the good work!

@debraran - is this facility in CA? I'm also attending a class for those w/osteoporosis in a Wellness/Rehab facility. I'm looking forward to see what progress I've made when the next DXA scan is done.

This make me happy. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in my L3 and L4 3.1 I terrified using prescription drugs I am 57 yrs old and my osteoporosis is due to early menopause at 45yr old . I have been exercising for over 12 yrs weigh lifting twice a week and doing yoga Pilates etc . Now I am taking calcium vitamin D and calcium rich food . I’m excited to hear from you that is possible to improve bone density with supplements and exercises without prescription drugs . Thank you 😊

@pmhpesp5 You are right that jumping is one of the exercise methods used to build bone density - but you shouldn't take risks when doing it! Most often people start with low heel drops and progress from there.
A versatile routine is most helpful - strength training with free weights, impact training (i.e. your jumps!), exercises for balance, posture, body awareness. I did the Kaari Prehab program for my osteopenia, it's a remote group program based on LIFTMOR study, and instructed by coaches with training in osteoporosis.

@singingbones mine is in CT (Gaylord) I am excited too, but no matter what, I know I’m doing myself good. One woman told me she improved from osteoporosis to osteopenia and another one told me she didn’t improve until she went two days a week versus one, even though the two days was in the study. She had to unfortunately pay out-of-pocket so she was trying to reduce the co-pays etc

@mvelazquez26 I also take AlgaeCal collagen. It was the cheapest one I could find on Amazon, especially if you buy two at one time and sign up for autoship.
