GABA hasn’t helped me at all! Been on it for a couple years. I was taking 2800mg a day. I started weaning myself off but my doctor said to go up to 1800mg. I did but no go. Finally told my doc I wanted to get off it so now down to 600mg. I asked her for Lyrica and she said no.
@scain I was on it for a short time but soon found out that I had every bad side effect there was. I had swollen feet and legs from neuropathy to begin with and one side effect is that it causes swollen feet and legs so I ballooned up!! I was exhausted and my vision was very much changed immediately, to name a few.
Nice that you have found your own answer to dealing with the pain. No news that we all have different levels of pain and some can tolerate better than others. I am okay for the most part with the gabapentin (Lyrica). I decide when to take the 200 mg. and when to take the 100 mg. depending on whether I am driving, etc. Doctors can make recommendations but ultimately it is up to each of us to decide what works for us. So glad that you have family close by and helpful grandsons. My only 2 children and 2 grandchildren live 3000 miles away in CA so I have gone full force into crafting. I sold a Old World Santa that I made for $375.00 last week and a lot of floral baskets also so even though I don't rely on this money as income, it does cover the cost of my supplies and there is always the sense of accomplishment that I missed after leaving a fulfilling job. Again, I think that we all are resourceful and with the info on the internet, here, etc. we are better equipped to find answers that perhaps a generation ago did not have access to. I have learned so much just here on this site and appreciate everyone's honesty. Thanks again for all of the helpful info whether it is about pain meds or recommended shoes, sharing this info is really helpful:)
I so very much enjoy the discussion, and I learn much from all of you. At 75, I consider that I have a lot of life to live yet, and I intend to charge ahead. I ride the stationary bike 1-2 miles per day at varying speeds. I have targeted exercises for my back, and use weights for arms, etc. I do about 10 minutes of stretches in the morning, both before and after I get up. I have a garden and farm to manage, and a husband with memory loss. No time here for lounging much. I do daily meditation and prayer. I found an excellent book called "Daily Devotionals for Seniors." It gives me comfort in dealing with the day-to-day variations in how I feel. I am getting ready for rotator cuff repair (directly related to osteoarthritis). After that, I will probably have an injection in my right hip. Maybe back surgery but right now that is not in my plans as my other efforts are serving me well. I am off to mow about 2 acres this morning on this beautiful spring day in the rural Midwest. Hang in there. We can all do this together.
@leehop71 Hi !! I have some manageable side effects so far at 300. I’m hoping to get to a therapeutic dose without anything serious happening. I really need this to work 🙏 I need my life back or at least some of it!🙏

Hello leehop71
I’m starting on low dose Gabapentin. It isn’t helping yet
What dosage are you taking?
@judyingenes I got difficulties by breathing. The medicine helped me with pains on my shoulders, but I couldn’t use it.
@rosac I started at 2 - 300mg per day. One in the morning and one at night, 600 total.
Zero pain, so much so, I naively thought one per day would work!🥴🙄
Needless to say, it took awhile but the pain started coming back so I went back to 600.
It took about a month to get back to zero pain!😉

1 Reaction@rosac I researched it and found out that for sciatica pain, the recommended dosage is 900, 3 - 300mg per day!
Also, keep in mind it usually takes at least 2 weeks to start feeling relief and at least a month before the pain is completely gone!
For me, I never had pain sitting or lying down. Just walking, and particularly when STANDING still!😳

Thank you ☺️ I started at 200 a day then after 2 weeks went to 300 I’m slowly working on it! I’m super sensitive to meds.
@rosac Let me also say that the side effects are different for every person.
A friend of mine was prescribed gabapentin and it made her foot spasm and curl up!!
Thankfully, my brother and I have had minimal ‘doable’ side effects.😉
