Nerve Pain In Foot after Laminectomy. Had this?

Posted by dakota24 @dakota24, Mar 18, 2025

I had L4/5 Laminectomy on 11/1/2024. Since the day after surgery I had terrible pain in my right foot. I did not have this pain prior to surgery. Every day I have a tingling/numbing feeling in my right foot, and at times burning sensations and also sharp nerve pains. This has prevented me from even putting on a regular shoe due to it hurting. I'm told nerves needed to find new pathways, this might get better. I cannot believe the only pathway here was to my right foot. I also still have bad lower back pain like I had before surgery. Anyone else have this? At what point will they consider injections or something other than gabapentin (which doesn't work) for this problem. It is ruining my life.

Have you found relief? I have been dealing with same issue for 11 months following a cervical laminectomy. I am taking Gabapentin and Meloxicam. Soon to transition to Lyrica. I have done 9 month of physical therapy. A total of 6 injections in my foot where a pain management doctor found "swollen" nerves stemming from tibial and sural nerves. I have seen Ortho, Pain Management and questioned by Neurosurgeon. None thought it was anyway connected to cervical laminectomy done 2 weeks before foot symptoms started. Quality of life has diminished. Still can not walk far with cane or crutches and still sharp pain with dorsiflexion.

@jangilsy Did the change to Lyrica help at all with lower leg fatigue? Have you had any improvement and if so, with what therapy or meds?

I had a discectomy of L5-L4… then a few years later L4-L3. I have neuropathy and pain in my left leg and foot. They believe it is a result of me waiting to long before first surgery and also scar tissue pressing on the nerves. They have gone in and injected fluid in an effort to break up some scar tissue. It did not work and BTW the most painful spine procedure I ever had. My back is better but I traded pains. I do not take pain meds of any type anymore and Gabapentin is terrible to me. I have, I suppose grown used to it… and just expect pain and weakness every day. I was a runner but I have not run in ten years. I do have to use a cane on bad days… I would certainly suggest epidural shots or RFA which is my preference…

@laughlin1947 I have more foot nerve pain than fatigue. Lyrica has helped some. Hydrodissection (steroid and fluid injection) has also given some relief but not enough to walk without assistance. I will have more of the injections done in 2 months. I am going to try something new called Neubie therapy (an electro stimulation device). There is also a therapy my mother is using for leg fatigue called Tecar therapy. She has had some positive results for her leg pain and fatigue. My specific condition does not qualify for that though.

Thank you all for the comments , I feel like I’m fighting a losing battle, I try a lot of different things , hopefully I’ll wake up one day and nerves are healed. I think they’re permanently damaged. It’s been one and a half years 🙏🏾

I am experiencing very similar issues. Ongoing for 11 months now. Laminectomy was done on November 27, 2024 and within a couple weeks I started with the foot pain, sharp, electrical like feeling with dorsiflexion, weight bearing and sometimes just subtle movement. None of my doctors from my Neurosurgeon, ortho or pain management thought it was related to the laminectomy, but I am now finding others like me. I did 9 months of Physical Therapy which helped somewhat and am currently taking Gabapentin and Meloxicam. I went through a series of 5 injections in my foot, as a pain management doctor found 4 inflamed nerves stemming from the tibial nerve. Toward the end of these injections the same extreme nerve pain started on outside of foot with Sural nerve. So far 1 injection for that. I am to do more injections in 3 months. The Tibial injections brought some relief, but so far the Sural injection has not. I am also to switch to a Lyrica and quit Gabapentin soon. Still unable to walk unassited. Currently using cane or crutches and even with those can not walk far at all. The shoe issue is still a problem. Cushioned open back shoes work the best. If someone is ever to be able to get rid of this pain I will update here. I will monitor for others that are on a similar pain journey as myself.

@jangilsy Hi, any updates? I am still waiting for relief since 2021 and have tried everything under the sun. I am insanely angry with my neurosurgeon who performed my L4-5 fusion revision & an unplanned laminectomy. When my excruciating foot pain surfaced suddenly 10 days post op, he shrugged his shoulders. Anyone with his caliber of training knows about the connection between L4-5 & the feet. On top of it, in 2022, the fusion had to be revised as well as the laminectomy which, according to the 2022 surgeon, was limited and incomplete. This poorly executed laminectomy caused new nerve compression for a full year before it could get fixed. I am in daily pain and have flares that keep me bed ridden for weeks. I exist but I don’t have a life anymore. I hope you are doing much better.

@jet1024 hi, I was a runner too… the pain in my feet is excruciating (5 years). It began with a poorly performed laminectomy that had to be revised. By the time the revision took place it was too late. I recently had to be on my feet for much longer than I could withstand at my daughter’s wedding and now I am bedridden. It’s been 3 weeks and I know something happened. I used to be able to bear weight for a max of 3 hours and now every minute is too much. Even when I elevate, the pain doesn’t go away. I’ve had flares before but not like this. I’m at a loss because no treatment has helped. I’m hoping to come across something new in this forum. I miss running but I would settle for walking 🥹

@ysphoenix I am sorry to hear about your pain situation. I seem to be stuck in the same place. Continuing foot pain in right foot. I’ve been searching for other opinions and answers for relief but still have not had help. Prayers for all of us in similar situations that we find answers.

@jangilsy oh I’m so sorry to hear this. Let me know if you are looking for a particular specialist or want feedback on any particular treatments. I think I have tried them all. I’m going to look up the “sprint” procedure someone mentioned as it is new to me. I’m seeing a new orthopedic foot specialist tomorrow. My case is complex due to repercussions from a foot surgery that should never had occurred. I was misdiagnosed. From what I know now, my nerve roots were aggravated and then left compressed during a laminectomy that had to be repeated the following year because the surgeon did not complete it properly! These nerve roots plus my foot nerves are implicated. We have to hang on for more advances in nerve repair & function 🤦‍♀️

I had a laminectomy, L4/L5/S1 5 years ago. I was reluctant to have the surgery so waited 2years afters the initial injury (in 2019). I regret I waited because I must have damaged my S1 nerves because I I have constant pain in the bottom of my foot pad and the 3 little toes have neuropathy. I live wearing Oofos sandels or if needed wide Hoka's. problem living in upstate Ny with snow!
I have been taking Gabapentin (up to 2400mg now) and Cymbalta for help but still have chronic pain. Cannot not take long walks anymore, miss that. I continue to search for something that will help with pain also. Luckily Gaba has helped.
