Questions for people taking Actemra and Kevzara injections

Posted by jeff97 @jeff97, Aug 1, 2025

I'm curious about other people's experience getting their injections. Recently my rheumatologist sent in a new prescription for me for 2 refills of Actemra where each refill had 12 injections. My Medicare Advantage plan imposed a 4 injection limit per refill, so the specialty pharmacy changed the prescription to 6 refills of 4 injections each. I live in the Raleigh area of North Carolina, and the specialty pharmacy is in Memphis Tennessee, which is about 750 miles away.

How many injections do you get at a time, and how far away is the specialty pharmacy you deal with?

Hi @jeff97, I was prescribed Actemra to treat PMR/GCA and I also receive my medication from a specialty pharmacy. I actually had to look up the location of the pharmacy because I had forgotten. I live in Dallas Texas and my pharmacy is in Memphis, Tennessee—several states away. Since I receive my injections by FEDEX, I honestly had not thought about it in a while. I receive 8 well packaged injections at a time. Have to say that I don’t have any concerns about the pharmacy as thankfully each of my orders has arrived well refrigerated with no concerns. Blessings! ❤️

@sandiw77 I assume I have the same specialty pharmacy as you, Accredo, since they are based in Memphis. I've checked the Fedex tracking for my shipments, and they get sent from Delaware. Accredo must have regional distribution centers.

My rheumatologist is planning to cut my injections to every other week in a couple of months. Since my insurance only allows me to receive a 28 day supply of Actemra, I think that will mean that Accredo will only send me 2 injections per shipment.

Blessings to you too!

@jeff97, yes Accredo is my pharmacy too. It looks like my branch is in Irving, TX which is just up the road from me. Thanks for causing me to pause and actually look that up too.

I have not received any information from my Medicare supplement (for military retirees & their dependents) that indicated they might reduce the number of injections. I hope this is not the case across the board because I have also had to add Repatha to my prescription list since my cholesterol went up with Actemra. I’m limited to two injections at a time and have had recently trouble with a late shipment and missed dose. That was not ideal, but it didn’t cause additional pain. Obviously, that would be problematic with Actemra. I am planning to discuss the issue with my Cardiologist at an upcoming appointment.
