I broke my heel bone and need help knowing what to expect

Posted by mandmom @mandmom, 1 day ago

So I fell off a ladder and broke my heel. I’m a 66-year-old woman with good bone density. I’m wondering what the outlook is going forward as far as how long it takes to heal, etc. I’d like to hear from people experienced with a broken heel and what it was like for them.

My husband fell off a ladder and broke his heel several years ago. (He was also 66 at the time) His required surgery and he was non-weight-bearing for about 8 weeks. He used a knee scooter and used a walker in the house. ( crutches we not a good idea for him) He has stiffness in his foot. Especially after ling walks. He was never offered PT. I’m strongly encourage you to seek out PT as soon as you can. It may help you maintain your mobility.

I’d follow up with your doctor and discuss your bone density although you said it was normal. Mine was normal but my cervical spine vertebrate was paper thin, and had to be removed in surgery. What I learned was that your bones have different densities around your body so talk to your doctor as well about the need for a bone medication. . Of course I understand anybody with really strong bones can break bones but at your age it’s worth a look and discussion with your doctor!

The knee scooter is very stable and comfortable, and it has brakes!

Also, get your doctor to get you a handicapped parking tag until you are healed!
