Coping with overheating/lack of sweating
I had a blood clot in my brain stem five months ago. Now that we’re entering summer, I’m finding I can’t cope with warm (not hot yet) temperatures. I don’t dare fly because you never know if it will be too warm on the plane, and some buildings are too warm and I have to leave right away. Cooling clothes don’t seem adequate. Suggestions? Doctors say they can’t help.

I have the same problem as you, which started after I had a hemorrhagic stroke (due to having moyamoya disease). I struggled for a long time to find something to help and, like you, didn't find cooling clothes that are sold or cooling packs to be helpful. I have learned that it is not only the heat but also dry environments that really are a problem for me. Here's some things that did help me:
1.) Soaking a zip-up sweatshirt in very cold water and draining it, then keeping it in a bag with ice until I am in the hot environment. I put it on and it keeps me nice and cool!
2.) Drinking a lot of cold water.
3.) Bringing a hand-held or plug in fan, especially one that squirts water.
4.) I inform all my doctors and ask for as cool an environment as I can. With some medical tests, the machines have to be kept cool, so that helps.
5.) Avoid caffeine and high salt foods/drinks.
The first approach is what helps me most. I'm a big believer in water therapy! I also avoid planes and very warm environments or building, which has meant some lifestyle changes. I also keep my house and bedroom cold, with very little heat and lots of a/c in the summer, but don't forget to drink water because a/c dries you out!
It has improved for me, but it took a number of years after the stroke.
Best wishes,
Valerie.
Thank you! Do you ever fly? I have found nonstop flights where I want to go, but it’s almost four hours.
You're welcome! Happy to help if I can. 🙂 I haven't flown since I had the stroke 9 years ago. I also worry about the a/c not working on the plane and about having to wait on the tarmac with no a/c, which I heard about last year, I think. I'm looking into traveling by train but haven't tried it yet.
Hope you find a good way to go wherever you want or need to go!
Valerie.
