Sneakers/shoes/sandals post knee replacement
I am 10 weeks post left knee replacement. Any recommendations on sneakers/shoes/sandals to wear. Been wearing sketchers slip-ins post surgery. Prior to surgery was wearing Altra and TEVA platform sandals. Thanks.

I think this is probably different for everyone, but I looked for something with good arch support. I tried many brands before finding a few that work for me. The Hoka Gaviota, Keene and Orthofeet seem to work the best for me. I have ordered from companies that give a 60day wear trial with free returns if the shoes do not work for you. Also, our local Scheels store will exchange the shoes after you have worn them for several weeks, if they do not work for you. I’m wishing you the best in finding what works for you.

2 Reactions@sandy19 After knee repair (not Tkr) and hip replacements, the PT's were emphatic about just one thing - no slides, flip-flops or crocs. It sounds like you are already there with Teva and Altra, which both provide support and fasten.
The other thing I learned was that my older shoes neded to be replaced because they had a memory (wear pattern) of my old gait/limp and were causing back pain when I tried to wear them. So you might want to examine the wear pattern on the soles and insides of your shoes and discard those with uneven wear. Given the cost of good shoes, it was difficult for me to do, but the PT was right!
Did your PT have any recommendations for you?

1 Reaction@sueinmn thanks for your message. I might visit an orthotic shoe store and look into orthofeet. You are right, I was not comfortable wearing my old Altra. My Home PT recommended Skechers. Will ask my outpatient PT next week.

3 ReactionsLoved my slide-in Sketchers after surgery. Good arch support and the ease of it all. I don't relish paying $80.00 for fabric shoes like Sketchers though; they only last about a season. Crazy.
Merrell brand best for daily walking/support/sustainability. I walk about 10,000 steps a day and need a good supportive walking shoe. Great for hiking on uneven surfaces/hills...
*Get your foot sized correctly too. I though shoes had just gotten cheaper and cheaper (they have), but my arch support has collapsed as I have aged and I was surprised that my shoe size has increased by an entire size! Time to clean out the closet.
Back to do I have the other knee done- it's killing me, especially when I move in bed at night... the Jiffy approach looks better and better.

4 ReactionsGood reminder to replace those old shoes in the closet, sigh. Over the years, I have had good experiences with various Keene shoes and boots because of the roomy toe "boxes". Also, I replace insoles in any brand shoe with Superfeet insoles. It's much better support than even the pricy brands provide. The Superfeet are expensive, but I watch for sales both on their website and on REI. Although you mention avoiding slides, I swear by the Hoka Ora recovery slides. This past year (after my first TKR) I felt they helped keep everything in the foot-leg-hip-back balanced properly. I think I'll get a new pair for the new knee!
