Groin hernia surgery and hematoma
My husband recently had hernia surgery. Within days the area began to bulge, resulting in a very large hematoma which had to be drained. Does anyone know how this happens? He is just home from the hospital and still has a drain in the area in case there is residual blood.

Hi @ead, I moved your discussion to the Digestive Health support group where members are talking about hernia (https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/digestive-gastrointestinal-problems/)
I'm tagging a few members like @djacobs714 @benjiron23 @riflemanz64 who have had surgery and may have tips to offer.
Ead, has the hematoma resolved itself in the past few days? How is your husband's recovery going?
That’s just something that happens to some people after surgery. Sounds like you are doing the right thing getting to the doctor. I had a little bulge a few months after my surgery and I went back to the surgeon and she said it would dissipate on its own. She told me to watch it and don’t play super man lifting heavy objects. It has gone away now. My surgery was done robotically with 4 holes cut into the stomach. I had a right side indirect inguinal hernia. I’m going on 1 year since my surgery. Good luck to your husband.

1 Reaction@colleenyoung the hematoma ended us up in the ER, and a 3 day stay in the hospital. He had surgery to drain the hematoma and had a drain put in. The drain is now out, the new staples are removed as of yesterday, and he goes back in a month.
