Male with neurogenic bladder: what are my options?

Posted by 2will2 @2will2, Mar 5 12:46pm

I’ve been diagnosed with a neurogenic bladder. I’ve been presented two options one self catheterization and the second supra surgery. I’m frightened of the whole situation. Who has experience with these two options?

What happens during the night? Also what happens when you’re out living your life then you have to self catheterize? I just felt that I’m out and I’m about and I have the valve. I can release myself in a public bathroom, but I don’t think for sanitary reasons, I could go into a public bathroom and self catheterize. I’m just confused anything you can tell me your suggestions I would certainly appreciate.

@2will2 I share your misgivings about self self catheterization. I am aware that many people do it successfully, but I still can’t imagine carrying all the supplies doing it while traveling, especially with bathrooms in unsanitary places. I am in Indonesia on our way to Thailand very happy to be using a valve.

Thank you for taking the time to reply while you were on a cruise. May I ask how old ? Also, how long have you been using the valve I saw my urologist yesterday and he’s gonna let me try using the catheter valve. The next time I go have my catheter changed in four weeks. This is all very new to me. Can you give me any for suggestions? Things that I should be aware of it before I start. Had a catheter right now in me for a number of months so I’m used to having something in my penis. That is become like a part of my life. It’s just hard for me to think that it’s gonna be a part of my life for the rest of my life. But we always do not know what lies ahead for us. And again, I thank you for your replying again. Enjoy the rest of your vacation.

Thank you waddling for taking the time to write to me. I found your words to be encouraging to me. Is that you’ve been doing this for eight years and you expressed really no complaints. Eight years is a long time and you seem very positive with all the other information that you shared with me. If I could ask, what type of catheter do you use? Would you have any suggestions for me when I’m gonna start doing the categorizing as to what I might use or definitely want to stay away from. I really had no idea that there were a number of choices. A fellow was texting me the name, Nikki 6969 and you shared with me the type of catheter he was using. I googled it and that’s where I realize and found out. There are a number of choices that lie ahead for me. Talking with the two of you certainly helped me. Up to this point I have kind of had my head in the sand. I’m starting to realize that I’m going to be making some choices in the near future. Presently, I have a catheter that the urologist changes every four weeks. So other than emptying the bag is really nothing that I am doing that is causing any discomfort or anything I should worry about. My surgeon and neurologist I have mentioned that you know I can only do this so long and that something else will have to be done. It’s easy for them to say to do self catheterizing or whatever because it’s not part of their life. I’m sure neither one has done it. And communicating with you and the other fellow I’m talking with men who know what it’s about and or living it. It was about a week ago a friend suggested I go into the Mayo Clinic website. This is where I started to get some information from real men who are living the life with catheters. I think both of you for communicating with me. The other fellow then I was a communicating with said that he categorize himself 4 to 6 times a day. They ask you wait how many times you characterize yourself? As you can see from that question I’m still kind of nervous about the whole situation. Your words are calming to me, especially when you told me this is eight years and you didn’t have any complaints that you expressed which gives me great hope. Can I thank you for your time and if you have any other suggestions if you give me I would really appreciate them.
Have a nice evening,

@2will2 @wadelong I would not try the interstem, it doesn't work or at least it didn't work for me. I have attached a picture of my catheter, I hope this helps. I was devastated when my bladder stopped working after surgery only to find that I had to self cath, but now it's a part of life. It's never a bother to ask me questions. I am 56 years old.

Good Morning @sperio ,
Thank you for your comments. As I have stated, I presently have a catheter in May that the urologist we move every four weeks in asserts a new one. So I have had a little to do other than empty the bag and wipe down the tube that connects from my penis to the stationary holder. And about a month or so I will have to start self catheterization and that will require a lot of my part. So I’m trying to find out what lies ahead and how my life is going to be. I’ve been googling and picking up some information there. I didn’t realize that they were so many choices as far as catheters were concerned. Such as whether you have to lubricate yourself or self lubricate, the type of tip, whether it is flat or what is a cute, length, and so on. Confusing and foreign information to me right now. You stayed at the type of catheter that you were using. You must have tried others and I have found this to be the best. Can you tell me why you use this particular catheter and what advantages you think it has over the other ones. Also, can you share with me any do’s and don’ts?

Dear;
Apology for late reply, I read it yesterday.
As for your bag it will tell you when to use the CIC as you monitor the capacity on a daily basis.
I am using teh CIC for 30 months now without any problem or complaint, as my previous narrators said it will become part of your life and you will coexist with it, just follow the instructions that came with all the self cather, I am using French 12-40, I tried many brand until I found the most suiitable for me, you can do the same.
Wish you all the best.
My bladder is not responding at all I am an Underactive bladder. but for you you will definitly have to consult your urologist.
If you need any additional information feel free to ask.

Thank you for taking time to reply to me. My bladder also is
Underactive. I went to a specialist two weeks ago where they removed my catheter and then fill my bladder with a water solution. They then asked me to urinate. Truly, after trying, I was only able to expel maybe 50 mL which is nothing the way they do. This is somehow my bladder or penis is connected to a recording device. That is a print out showing any type of exertion or pressure that my bladder is performing and was doing hardly anything at all if anything. So it looks like this is my life at this point on. I’m allowed to situation as a result of spinal surgery. Before the spinal surgery, I had no life confined to a wheelchair. And all of that came on suddenly. I now have a life where I can get up and go out and drive and walk my dog and go to church and go out to eat dinner. I am thankful for that. The payoff is the bladder situation. And I have to tell you I’m still scared about the possibility of doing self catheterization. I might visit with a neurologist Monday. It looks like I’m going to try to do the catheterization valve and see how that works out. In a way I feel like such a wimp because I have met people like you another man here in this website who have it all together as far as self catheterization. I admire them. Thank you for letting me kind of rattle on.
