Metoprolol - Short bursts of shortness of breath
I have been on 1/4 of Metoprolol Succinate 25 mg for almost 2 months. I was unable to tolerate more of this medicine as it led to heart pounding and palpitating. Originally put on this medicine for high heart rate. Now that I’ve been on it - I have all these new symptoms: palpitations (hard pounding heart beat if take more than 1/4 pill), chest fluttering, extreme constipation, periodic tightness in my underarm/chest, and brief bursts of shortness of breath. Has anyone else experienced these brief shortness of breath recurring episodes while being on metoprolol? They come all throughout the day whether I’m at rest or moving around.

Hi, I take mine in the evening around 5:00. It makes me tired so for me it's better to take closer to bedtime. I couldn't function if I took it in the morning. Does this med ever make you a little short of breath sometimes and also an increase in your appetite? It does for me. But I like it cause it relaxes me and I read it's good for anxiety.
Hi
Metoprolol is banned for the 2md time/Breathless, couldn't exert and pauses at night on my normal 47avge bpn.
Asthmatics or excema folks shouldn't take it.
I was changed to Bisoprolol which is better for AFers. It did not contol my H/R Day. But no breathless, pauses and I could exert.
Private H/Specialist 2 years 3 months later. Introduced to Diltiazem. 180mg CD AM and bisoprolol 5mg.
Rung NZ Healthline and talked to DR there then Nurse at NZ Heart Line. She advised cut down Biso.. to 2.5mg separated at PM and Diltiazem 120mg CD AM. She rung my specialist.
I've been on this regime until December but August -October lowering BP.
Stopped Bisoprolol.
I rely on Diltiazem only. H/R 100 or under, BP 130/75. Great.
Research ?s why beta blockers are used for hypertension. Drs will only put up or down. With AF you need to be under a cardiologist. And do the various tests. ECHO, ECG, 24hr monitor which prioved Metoprolol was NOT for me. A H/R Day of 186!

1 ReactionHello I to take metoprolol 25 MG twice a day for Afib and I too have a sensation that comes over me sometimes that make me feel I'm short of breathe or labored breathing sometime a little bit of racing heartrate it feels like my lungs are numb different than when I get a fresh breath of air it's strange sensation goes after awhile sometimes I a little jittery as well so far its manageable but I'm afraid to get off the medication cause I have high blood pressure
About four years ago, I had my first episode of SVT, after which my PCP prescribed 25mg of Metoprolol once a day. I did fine on this dose. Then came two more episodes of SVT this year. My cardiologist increased the 25mg of Metoprolol to twice a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. On the increased dosage, I am having shortness of breath and lightheadedness with very little exertion, such as going up the stairs in my two-story home. Also, I used to be able to zip right through my simple physical therapy exercises, but now I need to take a breather between each rep in the PT.

1 ReactionI am a 67 y.o. Female , new to this group , and have not read all the posts. I was prescribed Metoprolol in 2023 as it was found I had a heart murmur. I’ve never had high blood pressure. Given it to slow down blood flow as the usual tests showed that I had severe mitral valve prolapse and moderate mitral valve stenosis. Cardiologist Always said we would just watch it after every test. Frustrating. I need to say by working in an elementary school, I’ve had COVID 5 times. Never had issues before that. Dr. says that wasn’t the cause of heart issues. I don’t believe it. I also had a liver transplant in 2007 and knock wood have been extremely healthy re: that. Just a low immune system.
The dosage of metoprolol at first was 25 mg. I hated the way it made me feel. Extremely tired and in bad moods. I take Duloxetine for depression. In November of 2024, I tried to stop taking it and I shook and my heart pounded. My Nurse Practitioner suggested I half the pill in May of 2025, which I did and still do. For quite some time, I have been extremely short of breath, very tired and even more agitated. I pride myself on walking most everyday. For the past few months, it has been quite difficult to finish. Today, it dawned on me that I bet it is Metoprolol. Nurse Practitioner wants to put me on Atenolol, but side effects reportedly are the same. I truly do not want to take either. Like I said, my blood pressure is not high; if anything, on the lower side. Any suggestions?
