Journaling - The Write Stuff For You?

Long ago –okay, for me, it was long ago!- it was common for a young person to keep a diary, a place to write down the heartaches and giggles of growing up, the trials and tribulations of school, friendships, sports and activities. Sometimes it was a locked book, so that we felt secure knowing our secret thought remained a secret.

How times have changed! While I no longer keep a classic diary, it is no less important for me to write down thoughts, ideas, and heaven-knows-what, on a regular basis. Nowadays, the common name is a “journal”, and seems to appeal to every segment of society. There are an abundance of ways to do this, and so many reasons why. Although I prefer longhand, many people use a computer, and there are any number of prompts/styles/methods.

A journal is an invaluable way for me to check in with myself. It saves me from carrying around those thoughts that are like an albatross around my neck. I keep the journal on my computer, where I can easily access/process my journey. What prompted my journal-writing? I have been tapering off a medication ( under the watchful eye of my doctor) for a period of time, 4 years, and decided to take this opportunity to document my progress. It has become a daily practice in my life. What would I say to others about keeping a journal? There are no rules! Your thoughts/beliefs/opinions are unique to you and your experiences in life.

Yep, journaling is a very valuable tool for many people. No rules, not "correct" way to do it, although you will find bookstore shelves lined [virtually and in fact!] with guidelines. Just write!

personally I have found myself at odds for writing recently, and "shoulding" on myself. Number of words/pages a day/time period. Easy to give my opinion to others, much harder on myself. Last night's entry really hit a note:

Five words
Five lines
Five sentences
Five paragraphs
Five pages [dare I hope!?]
Does it matter? pen to paper and go

A new mantra!

I have heard it used for insomnia but have never looked into it.

@kayraymat cognitive behavior therapy-I have had this help for years-it is a key factor in stability and sanity-especially helps with stress

I had the option of a number of modes of therapy. I chose CBT for this, my first therapy experience, because CBT appeared the sort of therapy that would serve both my particular needs and personality. So far it appears I've chosen well.
