I've been on Fosamax for 3 weeks. My body aches, I have heart palpitations and my lower abdomen hurts.

@jaghiker I had Fosamax for about six months to a year and then no one followed up with a new option. I was given it originally because I slipped on solid ice and shattered my hand/ wrist/ arm area. It seems that I shouldn't have been taken off it without weaning and/or replacing it with another similar drug at the time. Fast forward to my 12 fractured vertebrae in my spine and breaking a couple of ribs just moving my arm a few inches at the beginning of my bone marrow biopsy last year. Smart to do your research on all options. After my bone marrow/ stem cell transplant failed to achieve remission, I was given Xgeva, then Prolia and then Evenity for 6 months. Instead of building bone, my Dexa scan showed I lost bone density. Had an aneurysm and a TIA, so they stopped my weekly infusions and also put me back on Prolia. With any of the stomach shot variety of drugs I just mentioned, you are at risk of developing Necrotic Jaw Disease if you have any dental care within certain time frames. I was such a high risk it was decided to have my perfectly healthy teeth removed to avoid the possible necessity to have my actual jaw removed. Be careful. I don't have an immune system because the heavy duty chemo wiped it and it never grew back, so I may not be the average patient, but having met someone who was having her jaw removed the following week, I can't emphasize the risk/relationship between Xgeva/Prolia/Evenity and maybe Fosamax (not certain) enough. Research every possible option to build those bones and stay healthy. Best wishes ❤️

@spunkyspinster
Wow! You have been through a lot.
I plan on researching this more. I had undiagnosed Lyme Disease for 2 years and now have arthritis and auto immune MCTD.
Thank you for your post.

@spunkyspinster Hi Spunky, I have much empathy for you and your years of struggle. I am so very sorry.
Would you mind, for teaching purposes sharing your age when you shattered your hand, and if you were working out or any lifting free weights?
Then, what was your DEXA scan bone loss at that time? Then, after all your years of treatments what was the bone loss?
Also, do you know if any nutrition lacking or taking through all this time? Pls, all for learning and teaching us. I’m almost 70 and just started eating at least 5 dried prunes, taking vitamins including vit k. I am -3.1 at my worse point a year ago.
Sincerely,

@sandy0257 I am more than happy to share any of my medical details. I was 50, almost 51 when I slipped on solid ice and shattered my hand/ wrist/arm beyond repair. I had countless surgeries and efforts to fix it, which didn't work. Initially, I had internal and external fixation with the steel bar above my hand/ wrist/ arm and screws going from the bar into my hand and arm. The wrist area had an internal metal plate with more pins/ screws. It will take me a while to look up my bone density stats because I recently had cataract surgeries on both eyes and the right eye has had issues from day one and unfortunately needs a new surgery, do I really can't see to read right now. It kind of complicates the full college load I took on for Spring quarter. I was (and always have been) very healthy with great nutrition and ample choices of good food at hand. I don't drink or smoke and have never done recreational drugs of any kind. I am 76 years old now. I have always been physically active and an appropriate weight (skinny as a child but never overweight during my lifetime). I will add more once I can see. My bone marrow/ stem cell transplant failed to achieve remission, after they anticipated I would get 10 extra years of life because I caught it so early, was in such great shape and took such good care of myself. I have never used free weights.

@spunkyspinster Gosh Spunky…I feel so badly for you! Shattering your hand at 51, must have been such a hard fall. I also admire you very much for all your hard work doing everything you can to get your bones stronger. It must have been very disappointing for the stem cell not to work as planned. I’m looking forward texting again with you.

@sandy0257 You are very sweet. Thank you. I think I have shared roughly a third of the unwanted medical issues that popped up after a lifetime of being in perfect health. I always tell everyone, it is just life. We all get something. People die of heart attacks and because of head on collisions every day and never get a chance to even say goodbye. I have been really lucky by comparison. I will write more, soon. Thanks again for being so thoughtful and kind. It really does make a difference.

I'm new to this post, but wanted to give my experience with Fosamax. I am 61 years old, I am a runner, and I have been weight training for 25 years. I was shocked when I heard I has osteoporosis. I was on Fosamax for 4 months, and started experiencing inconsistent heavy chest, some pains in legs, and an achy pain in my gums and jaw. My doctor said it was probably a coincidence with my mouth and never addressed the other issues I was having. I was told to make an appointment with her. The appointment schedule was 3 months out. I decided to take myself off of the fosamax until I could talk to someone regarding my side effects. In the mean time I bought a vibration plate, and continued with my vitamins, including algaecal which I have been taking since 1/1/25. Yesterday I went to a Naturopathic doctor to get a second opinion. There is a lot more to what I learned, but she changed my vitamins, and explained the calcium game (too much/too little) She also prescribed 2 other supplements, in which I am going to try. I am considering HRT; however, I have high blood pressure and it needs to be properly regulated before we would go that route. I have been on 3 types of BP med since being diagnosed 15 years ago, and it still fluctuates high and low. The jury is out on what my next move is. I have not changed my primary care doctor to this woman yet. I'll take any advice from anyone who has experience with osteoporosis, as I am new to this, and there is so much conflicting information out there. I want to do the best job I can to preserve what I have without compromising the rest of my health.

@lesliecassano I’m taking algaecal plus. Why didn’t your endocrinologist like it?
