Worsening of pain (arthritis)
I have pain in my left hand, at the base of my left thumb. I was managing it with Blue Emu per Dr Phil. It worked fine until now. I know arthritis is not curable but does anyone have any advice about things to try? I've seen the omega XL commercial. Does anyone out there have any experience with these pills or have heard anything about them?

@lopezalice1313 That's a really miserable thing to have to go through! Did you consider a rheumatologist? They might be able to help. another question - did you take any antibiotics? I'm guessing you're on some kind of anti-rejection medicine(s)? You might have to do a little research on your own, but a rheumatologist might be a big help.
Hi, @lopezalice1313 I’m sorry to hear you’re having so much pain in your joints. That’s so miserable and impacts your daily life! Since this seems to be a new development several months after your transplant it’s pretty normal to consider it might be connected in some manner.
You’re not alone in this complaint. There is a discussion in the forum with other liver transplant members sharing their experiences. Here is a link to that discussion started by @grateful76 a few years ago.

You mentioned that you brought this new symptom up with your doctors. Have any of them run tests to check the trough level of your anti-rejection medication? Are you taking any other meds at this time?

3 Reactions@uisge I met with him April 3rd, He told me to try something like Voltaren. If that didn't work, see him for a recommendation for PT or an injection. The next step would be surgery to remove the joint.

1 ReactionI had surgery (by a a hand specialist/ orthopedist) in my mid sixties. It worked wonderfully! Of course, followed by physical therapy. Now my right hand is giving me sharp pains. As a caregiver, I'm wondering how I can possibly have hand surgery in my dominant hand! I live in Florida and my busy kids raising their own children live in Texas.
Truth is I have a spine that is giving me trouble, as well as my feet and one knee. Taking care of my needs just doesn't seem possible. I have been sustained by water aerobics twice a week, and Pilates on Zoom twice a week...and Celebrex at night so I can sleep, and a few Gabapentin during the day.
Hope this helps.

1 ReactionI have arthritis all over and a titanium left hip and an oxidized zirconium right knee. I also have spinal and lumbar stenosis. The latter is currently in check from an epidural steroid shot but I have a great neurosurgeon on call if it stops working.
Recently my hand cramping has gotten worse. I was diagnosed by my primary a number of years ago with carpal tunnel syndrome and went to my hand surgeon. He found that I may have had some of the syndrome but primarily I have arthritis at the base of the thumb in both hands.
Now it is getting worse. So I made an appointment with my hand surgeon for April 24th to see what he can do, preferably non surgically.

3 Reactions@steveinarizona your situation sounds like mine. I went to so many arthritis doctors and surgeons and idiots. It would astounded you. My hand was hurting so bad that the arthritis surgeon said he could take it off but he couldn’t put it back on. Turns out they’re all idiots. I had gout. All they would look at are my x-rays and say you’re loaded with arthritis. Order some ZAZZEE tart cherry capsules I think it’s 3000:1. There’s only one on Amazon. You’ll be better in 24 hours. I suffered for 30 years! 30 years and all it was was gout. I have all the other things that you have I’ve had six joint replacement surgeries. I needed those surgeries anyway, but the whole body inflammation the sore, stiff hands and wrist and all the other things attributed to this stenosis in the carpal tunnel, blah blah blah. It was gout pain. Good luck I hope that’s your problem. Let me know if it worked.
@loriesco
Thanks. But gout is not my problem. My neurologist had referred me to a rheumatologist who tested me for gout and I did not have it. I wish that was the solution. I think I have arthritis at the base of the thumb in both hands and it sometimes turns into carpal tunnel syndrome.
@steveinarizona how did they test you for gout?
@loriesco
It was a while ago but I believe it was some kind of blood test.
@steveinarizona
I had an implant in my right hand pointer finger. I do many crafts include stain glass and my hands take a lot of abuse. With the plant at the base of the finger I can now use my hand again. Good luck 👍
