Sciatic pain

Posted by cghernand @cghernand, Feb 21 4:58pm

I was hospitalized on 9/11/25 for sciatic pain. I have never felt such pain, and nothing I did prompted this, that I know of.
I’ve had several MRI’s but I can’t seem to find help. ( narrowing in the nerve I guess)
I am starting to believe I have to live with this.
I live in a small town and so far I’ve only seen a nurse practitioner and had PT. The Np said I should get some square thing put into my nerve, that seems odd to me, a foreign object put into my body.
Any suggestions would be so appreciated. I have 5 grandkids, and I can barely move after being with them. And I might add, they mean the world to me; I will never stop being there for them.

I'm glad to know that many have pain. I have hypertrophy in the top thigh on my right leg and severe degenerative disc L4-L5 & L5-S1 and moderate in L2-L3 with a possible pinched nerve. Tylenol is what I was told to take. I've been trying physiotherapy but haven't had much luck. Right now I can't even bear weight on my left leg without screaming.
I try to avoid Tylenol because it messes up my bowel and stomach so I'm at a loss and sometimes the pain is almost more than I can stand. I feel my life is over and I'm only 74

@normaprice2003 have you been to a pain doctor? I’ve been in major pain since 28 (chiropractic 3x a week every week to keep neck moving) when the damage started showing up from a bike accident at 15. Put my neck in a reverse loridosis so my neck prematurely aged. 4 neck surgeries 3 shoulder. Now have severe scoliosis, spondy, DDD in my back, 5 fused in neck. 70 years old. Can’t live without my pain doctor. Massage & in hot tub every morning.
There are drugs out there that will give you back your life but only a pain doctor can prescribe them.

@conchgirl I haven't been to a pain doctor. The closest one is 2 hours away, its a pain clinic and the wait list to get in is lengthy. I did however get an appointment with an osteopath for next week.

@normaprice2003 The side effects are different for every person.
I have a friend whose feet started to spasm worse each day and obviously had to stop.
My mother used it and my brother has been on it for 7 years!
I have minimal loopiness and drowsiness that lasts a couple of hours, but is only noticeable if I’m ‘chilling’ with the TV
If I keep myself busy I rarely notice it.🤷🏼

Good to know. Thank you!

The hospital put me in gabapentin, I didn’t notice much of a change, but no side effects.

Hello I'm 44 this year and have been suffering from a back injury leading to a protruded disc aggravating my sciatic nerve just over a year ago. I have never known so much excruciating pain in my entire life, and nothing could have prepared me for it. I didn't even know what chronic pain was before this. My doc put me on weight loss injections, gabapentin, ibruprofen and panadeine, this does little or nothing to stop pain. I have had very little sleep the past few months, have had to restrict my work and virtually lost my independence, can't exercise and have lost all flexibility. At times I have wanted to die, and I have never felt so alone. It is so hard to see a future after this. I did this injury while volunteering with sandbags during a storm event and have had very little support or sympathy from that organization, even though this injury has ruined my quality of life. After a three month wait, I finally got to see a specialist who was rude, dismissive and lacking in empathy, but he said he will give me the spinal injection in 17 days from now, so I'm self-managing the pain and counting down the days, just praying it works. I hope that we can both find some relief soon and I understand how you must feel. Please know you aren't alone. Don't give up.

Hello,
My heart goes out to you & I think I kinda know how you feel. I was going to the pain NP asking her for an MRI of my lumbar spine since the end of '25. By the beginning of this yr the pain was in my rt sciatic, hip, & down the side of my leg & nerve pain down to my foot + my foot went completely numb. To mk a long story short I went to the ER & finally got my MRI which showed anL4-5 disc herniation compressing my L5 nerve root & my spinal cord to only 5mm, severe is < 10mm!
I went 2 a neurosurgeon & he said I could try conservative methods lk epidural injs, physical therapy, and better body mechanics ie. No bending @ the waste & no lifting of heavy objects...all per Dr's orders of course...
Im just a nurse w/ a bad back but I saw a pain mgmt Dr when my pain was escalating.
I hope those ideas help you avoid severe nerve pain traveling down your leg!
Be careful & good luck...

Oh my gosh, my heart goes out to you too! My foot went numb too, I am so glad that has gone away.
I did hear no heavy lifting, I’ve tried so hard to avoid this, but since my retirement last May, I watch my grandkids a lot, part of this is picking up at school etc. I just can’t avoid lifting the two little ones into their car seats. Which hurts each time. I truly hate always having pain, so I have been pushing through, trying not to take many pain meds.
Finally after waiting since last September, I see a good pain management doc this week. I pray he can help in some way.
Thank you for your suggestions! So appreciated!
