Staying Motivated for the Long Haul

Posted by LindaF @fessmom, Jun 29, 2017

My biggest obstacle to maintaining a healthy weight is a seemingly invisible "switch" that goes on and off in my brain. When it's "on" I am in the zone and can avoid the most decadent temptations and will exercise faithfully. But, about a year to 15 months into my healthy lifestyle, the switch turns to "off" and I lose focus and revert to my bad habits of poor food choices (both in what I eat and how much I eat) and I become more sedentary. I am at that point now and I feel a slow panic building as the number on the scale inches upward. I know what I should do, but I am at a loss as to how to get my mojo back. Suggestions, anyone!?

@JustinMcClanahan @contentandwell I wish you lived in the Des Moines area! I'd send you to the gym with my daughter. She's a personal trainer!

@jodeej That would be great! Send her to NH please!
Having a daughter who is a personal trainer do you tend to exercise more than you would otherwise?

@contentandwell I think I do exercise more. She and her husband are a bit of a motivation!
I've been AWOL due to my father-in-law passing a week and a half ago. Even with not eating and exercising like I have been I was able to not gain weight. Last night I got on my bike for the first time this summer. It was really fun and relaxing. I need to do that more often!

@jodeej I am sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Those times are difficult.
If your bike is fun and relaxing, I assume it's a real bike. I dread getting on my recumbent bike but once I get going I can generally keep it up for about a half hour or more, and usually almost "6 miles". I try to do the bike almost every night. My ortho said to do it five consecutive days a week followed by two days of recovery. I don't always follow those instructions though anymore.

@contentandwell it is a "real bike". Lol There is a very nice county park not far from our house, so I loaded it up and went out there to ride. I'd been wanting to see if I could load it myself so it was a good test run. I'm hoping to go to other nearby places and ride on the bike paths.I have a friend that rides quite often so I need to strengthen up to keep up with her!

@jodeej I would really like to ride outside but it's pretty hilly around here. I think I would have to bring the bike somewhere flatter to do it, plus I do not currently own a bike. I gave mine to my daughter when she was in college and have no idea what became of it. If I figure out a good place to ride I might rent a bike for a day and see how that goes before buying one.

@contentandwell we live in the very hilly Loess Hill area, so I struggle to find "flat land" to bike on! Lol The park I went to head a couple hills that I ended up walking part way up, but I surprised myself by making it up a couple. I want to take it when u go visit my sister and go riding there. 🙂

YOU could try Hypnosis for free for Weight. Just copy and paste: Hypnosis free Weight loss. Pick one with the time you want to give to it. I'm usually asleep before it finishes. Here is one: Free Weight Loss Self Hypnosis Session - Night Time Version - I get a Much Deeper Sleep.

@jodeej, @contentandwell, I am impressed that you are both discussing bicycling! I used to ride somewhat after college with my cousin, but I am not real comfortable with the balancing aspect. Never fully confident so I got rid of it before children.
How are you doing these hot days? Have you been able to find any opportunities to take a refreshing bike ride, or a stroll in a comfortable setting? or in the gym?

I think it is my turn to report in to all of you. First I want to send my sincere thanks for keeping this conversation ACTIVE (fitting words don't you think?).

I was doing real well with exercise and eating habits, I even lost some pounds - enough to earn a reduction in my BP meds! But two recent trips that included yummy foods that I couldn't resist are now going to need my strict attention.

Now the good part! Last week hubby and I spent some time in the Great Smoky Mountains, and occupied a major portion of our energy/time on the trails. I could feel the benefits of my time in the gym that I did in preparation. With that motivation, I am heading back to the gym, hopefully regularly, to keep it up.

Now that I have made a public declaration - I look forward to reading your motivations, and your struggles, and your successes!
