Has anyone had their loved ones on antianxiety drugs?
My husband with MCI has anxiety. The neurologist prescribed him Xanax, but I am wondering if Zoloft would be better

I am surprised he prescribed Xanax. My husband is on generic Zoloft along with his other dementia meds.

3 ReactionsNot a doctor, but I understand that Xanax can be used only for a short time to deal with a bout of anxiety. Long term, you need more and more for it to work, until it doesn't ie. it's addictive.
It happened to a friend, and he couldn't take any more anxiety meds.

4 ReactionsI saw awhile ago a post that a doctor prescribed .125 Klonopin under the tongue at night.
My husband, bless his heart, does not have any anxiety that I can detect. He sleeps all day and night and has lost his appetite and it is hard to see him losing weight because I am afraid that his body is starting the process of shutting down. In our situation the person that needs anti anxiety medication is ME. My internist gave me an RX for lorazepam ( generic Ativan) which I use occasionally at night when my mind starts spin around thinking about what is to come, how will I handle it, how will I adjust to living alone without the love of my life. It takes the anxiety down to a tolerable level. It is just one tool in my self care toolbox.

5 ReactionsMy husband just started 25 mg of Zoloft for anxiety. He was just moved to the Memory Care unit at the CCRC we bought into. We started the Zoloft for any increased anxiety that will occur with the move. He is also on .125 Klonopin in the middle of the night. To fall asleep he is on Trazadone. He is not on any other meds. Aricept and Exelon were not helpful. He seemed to get more agitated. I sometimes think I did not give them enough of a try but he has moderate Alzheimers and we are waiting for the results of his skin biopsy for Lewy Body.
My PCP wanted me on something awhile ago but I told her I'd rather have my glass of wine with dinner. A pill would not allow me to choose red or white or which stem glass to choose as I sip and relax with dinner or sitting and writing in my journal. She smiled.

5 ReactionsMy wife does not have generalized anxiety but a long (decades) history of depression and takes fluoxetine (prozac), bupropion and trazodone (doses have been adjusted for effectiveness/side effects). But she drinks wine nightly, and one drink alters her personality and cognition. I suspect an anxiolytic like xanax would do the same (I'm a retired doctor).
