Hello. As I said above, I am new to this site and unfortunately, I am the probable patient. I have a local diagnosis of early dementia and my husband and I are trying to find the best treatment center for me that isn't too far from our home. My current neurologist isn't giving me much assistance, so I'm reaching out here. Live in California and thinking Mayo in Arizona would be best. Do they treat on an outpatient basis??

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Caregivers: Dementia Support Group.

UCLA has a Alzheimers/Dementia program, which my husband is part of. We have a whole care team which we appreciate very much. H had a neurologist, to begin with, who was just a general neurologist and did not contribute to our need of guidance, at all. Now H has a specialty neurologist through UCLA and a lot of guidance for both of us. Good luck to you. God bless.

I live outside of Phoenix and my understanding is yes, Mayo is open to all patients, depending on insurance, etc. I'm a native Southern Californian though and I'm sure there must be excellent treatment centers/neurologists in your general area. Traveling to/from CA and AZ is not fun either.

Some options might be, as mentioned above, UCLA, perhaps UC Irvine, USC, or Cedars Sinai. Just a quick google for So Cal (are you in Southern CA?) came up with one option-
UC San Diego Health Brain Health & Memory Disorders Clinic: Features a team of neurologists and psychiatrists specializing in Alzheimer's and Lewy body dementia

Very best to you.

@jillemckeon Thank you for your information. I do realize traveling to Arizona can be a pain, but Arizona is not required to report findings to the California DMV. As I am still very able to navigate our streets and highways, and as I am still active in my husband's business, I need to be able to drive. California has a mandatory reporting clause that reports even mild dementia to the DMV, which can mean loss of mobility and potential loss of income for me.

Oh wow. I had no idea that was a CA law. Understand completely.

@sunybuni
But stay on top of your driving skills. My husband thought he was fine to drive and nearly killed us. We surrendered his driver's license voluntarily.
AARP and perhaps others offer driver safety courses, however if your brain is not giving you correct info, no class will help.
