Post Covid, night time, shortness of breath and racing heart.

Posted by sweetwater9 @sweetwater9, Jun 16, 2025

I have had Covid several times and the last four times, I have been experiencing night time shortness of breath (SOB) and rapid heart beats. Each time, so far, has lasted three months. Is anyone else experiencing this and if so what has helped eliminate these symptoms?

Hi! I am late to this discussion.
Yes, I have LC in the lungs. My CT lung scans show the glass, opaque appearance for several years now. I have been slow being diagnosed b/c it is relatively new in my rural area. A rheumatologist finally labeled it. I had been to a pulmonologist, GI specialist (have liver problems r/t LC.) My labs were elevated for autoimmune...so I am only now working with doctor for treatment plan.
Covid in the lungs is difficult and each time I get Covid it seems worse. And as your own experience, I have a harsh, productive cough for at least 3 months with shortness of breath on any activity. My heartrate doesn't increase with these bouts yet. Hopefully something is found for management.

I am the one that started this thread. I am still experiencing the SOB and racing heart at night. I no sooner got over the third Covid post SOB etc. at the end of April, then I got sick again and it started all over again. Now it is 3 and a half months it is taking this time to resolve. It is much better now though. I started a little Glutathione, but I felt I was detoxing too much and decided to do it at a later date. Now, after a great deal of research, I have decided to go with two probiotics that do not produce histamine and they both actually degrade histamine. I strongly think that my symptoms are related to too high histamine levels.

From what I have read, if your gut microbiome is imbalanced you can have too many bacteria that produce histamine and not enough that degrade histamine. Anyhow, I am starting on the first probiotic slowly and then the second and then some special "food" that my naturopathic doctor insists is needed to colonize the new bacteria. Both probiotics are good for the immune system as well. Not only am I trying to reduce histamine levels, but I am trying to build my immune system to see if I can avoid getting Covid for the umpteenth time. Or at least avoid the SOB and racing heart afterwards. But, I am not just experiencing the SOB and racing heart, with this I also experience fatigue, congestion, morning headaches, increased anxiety and some coughing too. Wish me luck.

I’m sorry to read how many people are going through the long side effects from Covid, I too had covid once in 2022 and for two years my heart was beating too fast even at rest and also profuse sweating. I don’t have these symptoms anymore and I’m truly grateful because I didn’t get any help with it, I had all the necessary tests done by a heart specialist but nothing ever showed up. I noticed that many people have the same problem, they have symptoms of every kind and they can’t find anything, normally you’re happy to hear that but still the symptoms continue. I would like to say that I started wearing my mask whenever I was inside with other people I prevented another covid infection, all I know is that even though they were telling us that we don’t need them anymore I wasn’t listening, not everyone has symptoms when they are infected so they don’t know that they’re contagious and that’s where the risk comes from.

I wear a mask when I am near several people or up close to someone. It is amazing that there are still people that will get right into your face talking loudly and some will laugh loudly right into your face. When I visit my daughter I ask if anyone has been sick recently or if those that have been around her and her family have been sick. But the real test is when school starts and all the germs are flying between the kids.

I wear a mask if I am close to people. And use a saline solution with some drops of 10% povidone-Iodine solution in it as a nasal spray to help prevent illness. I had my heart checked out (good condition) and waiting to have a scan of my coronary arteries. Thanks for responding.

@sweetwater9 If I'm going to be in large crowds, I do the same thing with providone-iodine. I also use it as a throat spray, using a small spray bottle with the same ingredients. I read about it being used as a prophylactic medical people during the covid pandemic.
It was on a NIH research website.
I see it being sold in nutrition stores now. I also read it can be used for other viruses, e.g. colds , Flu etc, to reduce the virus, if caught early.

@frouke So true. My doctor never tested me for covid but I got sick the end of 2024 and it's ongoing. Never been sick before (75 years). First he said whooping cough, then another respiratory virus. I coughed for over a year. The latest issue was heart palpitations. My Dr said its stress and gave me Ativan (so I slept through them). After two months they are almost gone. My cardio said "heart looks good". I have a stabbing feeling in the middle of my back. It radiates up to my left shoulder and then around to my chest feeling like an elephant is sitting there. . I went to the ER where a C Scan said my back is degenerating with stenosis. (No heart attack). This pain is causing nausea and I've lost 12 lbs. For a while I couldn't even eat. I'm all alone now and feel like the doctors are treating me like a hypochondriac old lady. I live 140 miles from Phoenix and would like to go to mayo clinic there.

@dcypherzzz, I’m sorry you’re going through so much pain and health problems, I honestly feel that women our age get treated with disrespect because and they don’t take us seriously, I have often felt this way when I have problems. I have a new doctor now and believe me where I live it’s a blessing to have a doctor but he doesn’t take me seriously and when I try to tell him what I know he takes a tantrum. I recently got a medication from him to help me get more rest I looked it up and learned that you can’t take it if you have asthma and I do?? I simply disposed of them and I don’t plan to say anything about, he just doesn’t have a lot of regard for me but I’m very careful especially with medication and I’m glad that I am, take care of yourself and don’t let them bully you, best wishes.

Yes. From the onset of LC Sept 2020, so, in my 6th year...

SOB/Dx POTS and Orthostatic Hypotension/Heart racing/palpitations/spikes&dips [without exertion -up to 200; down to 40, usually during the same "episode" while sitting]/ chest pain& pressure.

For me, Metropol was prescribed and became my saving grace from the extremes. I still have it all, but at much reduced degrees.

I apologize if I sound so mechanical in my response. It's just so familiar and persistent, I'm on auto replay.

I must emphasize, God is good! Ultimately, He is my saving grace for this life and the next. Looking forward to walk with Christ through holy week and celebrate being crucified and raised with Him. Sunday is comin'!! Hallelujah and amen.

Blessings to all ❤️

@dcypherzzz I think it’s a good idea to try and arrange an appointment with Mayo in Phoenix, perhaps you can ask a family member or friend to come along for support, considering all that you have gone through and made to feel uncomfortable. It’s not an uncommon thing for this to happen in today’s world but if you have options to choose from then I think it’s worth the trip.
