Diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, on no prescribed meds!
I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. My Dr. did the bloodwork, there were 9 tests and 5 were abnormal and 4 were normal. I messaged my Dr. and she said she doesn't want to put me on any type of medication. She wanted to test my adrenal glands. I just did the testing for that everything is normal, except for DHEA, which is abnormal. On my chart, here is her response, "No evidence of adrenal insuffiency. No additional testing or treatment needed to the cortisol levels." I have a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, a nodule (very small) on my Thyroid. I have a lot of fatigue. In addition, I do have CVID-Common Variable Immune Deficiency. I do weekly infusions, subcutaneous injections at home. I have a cold or a virus of some sort, so the past 3 weeks I haven't done my infusion, as not suppose to do it, when I am sick. It is possible my fatigue is due to my CVID. I have struggled with fatigue now for 3 years. This year my fatigue has gotten way worse. I do have one silver filling and wondering if that is the cause of my sore throat and difficulty swallowing or maybe a combo of that and the nodule? Considering switching Doctors at this point. Anyone else in the same boat as me or been there in the past? Thanks!

Yes, she is an Endocrinologist. No, she didn't say there isn't a medicine for Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Don't believe food is the issue here. I have been dairy and gluten free since 2016 and now I am intolerant to eggs. I am not celiac, I am intolerant-gluten and wheat intolerance. My Dr did mention going gluten free would help me, however I am already gluten free before being diagnosed with Hashimoto's. My antibodies- Thyroid are positive. I was checked for adrenal gland insufficiency and everything normal except for DHEA, which was low. I have messaged her telling her I do have fatigue and is there any type of medication for me or this? She takes an extremely long time to respond back. She doesn't use nurses or other staff to monitor her my chart messing area. I have another appointment to see her and I will go see her again. It is this summer or May or something like that. The fatigue could be related to my CVID- Immune Deficiency, however I am having other symptoms that aren't typically seen with the immune deficiency, like excessive bowel movements. I am getting checked for SIBO- breath test this Monday. It could be related to that. I am in post menopause, which hormones could be playing a part in all of this too. I have difficulty swallowing and sore throat, so getting checked out my ENT to see if there is something else going on with my throat.
Writing questions down is an excellent idea and I do that majority of the time when going to see a doctor. I try and think of all my questions ahead of time before I go in, so I am ready! I have a journal that I have all my medical issues/medicine/Doctor's info, my surgeries, etc... It has a symptom tracker in there also. It is great, Clever Fox medical journal. They have a lot of them, more on the pricey end, however well worth it. I am so glad I bought one. The only thing she has prescribed me, not a prescription- over the counter supplement is alpha lipoic acid. I told her I had a lot of itching/scratching the bottom of my feet. There's no rash or anything going on with my feet on the outside. Had a Dermatologist look at it and she said it looks fine. I do have some numbness and tingling at times with my feet or hands. It is helping some with all of that, so I am glad she wanted me to take that.
Here's my results, fyi:
Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody- 22.6 High
Thyroglobulin Antibody---- High
ACTH BLD- Low
Cortisol---- Low
DHEA-S BLD----Low
Vitamin D- Normal
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone- Normal
Free T4- 1.5 Normal
Free T3- Normal
DHEA Blood- 2.6 low
Basically, I have been tested for Cortisol a few times and 1 time low and the other time normal. I see a Functional Medicine Dr. this week. I will see what she has to say and can recommend for me. I did do some red light therapy and I noticed after 1 visit, my throat felt a little better. I went in actually for help for TMJ. Didn't notice help with TMJ, but throat saw help. Red Light therapy might be option for helping with my throat situation, if ENT doesn't want to do any tests or can't find anything going on.

My sister has Hashimoto's and is on thyroids med for it, don't know what type. Her Naturopath told her to eliminate gluten, my sister said "Hell NO!!".
I have read it is not uncommon for women with thyroid disease to develop Interstitial cystitis which is a chronic condition causing bladder pressure, bladder pain and sometimes pelvic pain.
Her bladder has produced so much scar tissue from this disease that she has an urge to pee @ 4oz of fluid in the bladder. She has taken to wearing Adult diapers when traveling as stopping for 4oz of pee gets to be too frequent and inconvenient.
The bladder scarring process took about 20+years to develop.
She finally gave up alcohol as it acidifies the bladder and irritates it, but gluten is still in her diet. I know this tale will not apply to everyone but thought someone might benefit from being proactive and changing their diet for enhanced long term health.

2 ReactionsHi
I was diagnosed with Hashimotos Disease when I was 45 . I have been on medication since that time. I am 83 and only had my prescription changed once. The medication for me has done wonders . Took about 6 weeks to get my body regulated.. I had a wonderful Dr who specialized in that disease. She has since retired. A Blessing
I ll keep good thoughts for you in finding an answer. Keep keepin on. Each day is a gift

4 Reactions@beebe Sorry to say, that unless she has a Thyroid Disease like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, medication won’t help. The food elimination is what will work, it did for me. There is a book written by Isabella Wentz, Pharmacist on the Root Cause of Hashimoto’s. It’s very easy to read and understand and it helped me a lot.

My sister has Hashimoto's, otherwise known as hypothyroidism. The thyroid medication alone was not enough to stop the progression to Interstitial cystitis in her bladder. Like you mention, she should have changed her diet but was not willing to. It is too late to save her bladder, once it is scarred I do not believe the scar tissue ever resolves.
I will mention the book to her, who knows it might help with symptoms to make a change at this late date. Thanks for your feedback!

For oils, we use olive oil mostly. Soy, I believe some of my gluten free frozen meals may have soy in them. I will start looking for that and avoiding soy. I will avoid the seed oils also. Thanks for the advice! I already am gluten free and dairy free way before now. I mostly eat salads, soups, rice, meat dishes and veggies. Occasionally, I get a frozen gf/df frozen meal Amy's from the grocery store or a pizza order out for a gf one and df cheese. Occasionally, I will get the pasta boxes, gf for mac and cheese. I can always improve on my eating. It could be the food I am eating, however it could be other things also. I already have problems with my immune system. My antibodies don't work like others do. It takes me a long time to heal. That is why I get infusions to put people's antibodies inside of me. I take Selenium, Vitamin K, Zinc, Multi vitamin and other B vitamins.
My current doctor told me the thyroid is one of the most difficult organs for doctors. I have dealt with Hashimoto’s for years. Initially, I was put on Synthroid and used that for years
and then after several years Cytomel was also prescribed. It was still difficult to get all my levels in normal ranges. Eventually, after switching doctors, I was put on NP Thyroid - a naturally derived dedicated thyroid extract. I also learned with my current doctor that I was gluten intolerant, needed to add selenium which I do by eating 5-6 Brazil nuts daily. I also had my mercury fillings removed. All my thyroid levels have finally come into normal ranges. Fingers crossed they stay that way.
Best to all of you in finding what works for you to feel your best!
I was diagnosed with Hashimotos a couple years ago and hypothyroidism, then started bouncing back & forth between hypo & hyper. I've had gut issues my entire life, I also have gluten, dairy, soy, corn meal intolerance so eliminated them from my diet, very challenging since corn, soy and gluten are in almost everything. I eat no processed foods (very bad for the gut), cook everything myself, make big batches of bone broth every month, when my gut gets wonky its the one thing I enjoy and its really good for the gut.
I'm now starting to dig into and learning more about how much hormones affect women in all periods of our life from adolescents to after menopause and until we die. I just listened to the BEST Mel Robbins podcast with Dr. Ruben and it was EYE opening. I strongly suggest ALL women listen or watch on YouTube.
I'll grab the YouTube link, I listen on Spotify.
Game changing info!! It is lengthy but well worth it, ill listen again.
It's titled sexual health but it's so much more. Anyone with an elderly loved one who gets UTIs and especially those who have dementia or Alz and get UTIs as we know they exasperate the symptoms when they get a UTI.
If you ask me its completely UNACCEPTABLE how long it's taken for medical/disease testing was always on men, it was the 1990s before they started acknowledging and realizing, gee, maybe Men & Women's bodies are different. Ya think? I'm really flabbergasted how long it's taken and we still have a long way to go.
Your best defense to advocate for yourself is to LEARN. Be a sponge, knowledge is power. Take your power back to ask the right questions, push back, DO NOT stay with a doc that dismisses your symptoms, says its in your head or the worst, "your numbers are all good so you should be good". No doc I'm NOT, I still feel like crap almost all the time which is exhausting. Crickets...
