CT scan found tiny pulmonary nodules

Posted by johndavis60 @johndavis60, Mar 16 3:15pm

Hi All, from last weeks CT scan, they found a few tiny nodules in my lungs. They are two small to biopsy and my MO said they are most likely benign and caused by inflammation. I did have a recent cold. But now after what I thought was a great report my anxiety has shot up again. Anybody have any experience with this?

@surftohealth88 Sorry I wasn't more clear previously! The tumor in my lung was not a PC mets; it was a primary lung adenocarcinoma that was an incidental find. I had no symptoms whatsoever from it.

@kenhorse

Thanks for additional explanation.
It is really fantastic that they actually discovered it by accident and so early and that provided opportunity for fast and complete removal - yeayyyy : ))) ! I am so glad to hear that you are doing great now .

@topf prostate pathology was Gleason 7, completely contained with no lymph node involvement. Lung tumor was also contained ( stage 1a) and again no lymph node involvement. PSA has been undetectable since and lung has shown NED since as well. I am soooooo thankful for early detection of both.

@kenhorse Thanks for the info. I had never heard of a lung met without any other spread.

@kenhorse OK, so it was unrelated to PCa. But it lit up on a PSMA?

I don't know if it "lit up" per se` (but I assume since it wasn't PC related, it just showed and not necessarily "lit up".).

In any case, it was about 2.5 cm in size at the time with no lymph node involvement so I had no chemo nor any other action other than scans every 6 months for the first 2 years and now once a year.

Same here. My docs didn’t make a fuss about it. A year later a scan showed no change in size of the nodules meaning cancer was ruled out. It’s the least of my worries.

I was unaware, so quickly asked Siri about whether prostate cancer spreads to the lungs? Siri said that of those prostate cancers that metastasize, 46% can spread to the lungs. This I do know: During embryonic development, each organ in our body arises at different times out of three classifications of embryonic tissue: Ectodermal, Mesodermal, and Endodermal. As far back as the mid/late 1970's when I was in college studying cellular and molecular biology, two things were known, and still hold true today: 1) Cancer cells - the cell membrane surface - revert back to embryonic-like tissue. 2) Metastatic cancer cells often/usually spread to tissue of similar embryonic origin, so cancerous tissue that had, say, endodermal embryonic origins, will spread to other tissue in the body also had endodermal embryonic origins. The prostate is of endodermal embryonic origins, and so are the lungs. That is why Siri confirmed that 46% of prostatic metastasis often goes to the lungs. Oddly though, a common metastatic location of endodermal prostate tissue, is mesodermal bone tissue. And oddly, up to to 90% of prostate cancer spreads to the bones, so...the rule obviously doesn't hold or apply in the majority of the cases, but it does hold to it with it spreading to lung tissue.
I found my college Embryology class fascinating...the professor was well known in the world of cancer research. He was the one that found out why cancer tumors and cells "fall apart" and metastasize: it is lack of, or ability to use, divalent ions, particularly Magnesium, and to a degree Calcium. He created nutrient media ("soups") with all ingredients, but left one of each of the ingredients out of the mixture. All tumors and cells held together, except in the media soup that lacked magnesium...they all fell apart. His research discovery was part of what is known as the Fluid Mosaic Cell Membrane pattern, where our cell membranes are really a "fluid" (moving) sea of floating, migrating/moving proteins and other components that move around, and hold each other together, and in particular, are given structure by spindle-like fibers of protein forming a sort of cellular "skeleton" (a.k.a. "cytoskeleton"). I was going to start graduate school to do cancer research, but did a detour into the clinical laboratory instead, which was very rewarding. But, the study of cancer, particularly metastatic cancer, is really the study of Embryology!

Hello, I just got my PET scan results and my dr. commented that I should have a more specific CT scan of my lungs, as he thought that the 3 and 5 mm nodules were histoplasmosis, spores from blackbird droppings. I showed no other PA had spread, so I'm not worried and will get another CT scan in the future just to put my mind at ease.

After my prostatectomy small lung nodules (only) appeared on CT scan. They were too small to safely biopsy. After about three months on Eligard nodules “disappeared indicating nodules were there originally due to prostate cancer and not other lung related cancer. Am now changing from Eligard to Orgovyx due to cardiac precautions. Taking Nubeqa as well and have undetectable PSA and testosterone with recent bone scans, PSMA Pet, showing no metastasis in past year. Am Gleason 5+4 stage 4 so feel very fortunate so far on this journey. Summary: Small nodules “only” may be a good sign for you- hope some hormone therapy will resolve nodules!

@rwski79 thanks, I’m hoping they are not cancerous though. My PSA has been undetectable for 4 months after starting Firmagon and abiraterone and radiation. I have no cancerous lymph nodes, so seems unlikely that those nodules are cancerous, but time will tell. 🙂

@drcopp Wife/caregiver here just to say that I had what looked like, on x rays, a salt shaker had been sprinkled on my lungs, according to the radiologist and primary care doctor. It turns out to be histoplasmosis from bird droppings in the downtown area where my office was at the time. I never developed any symptoms from the histoplasmosis as far as I know.
