Fatty liver without cause?
I would love to hear if others share my experience of high cholesterol and now fatty liver with possible fibrosis...
My PCP has not prescribed statins for my many years of high cholesterol (HDL and LDL) since other common symptoms have not been present. Older woman, vegetarian, not obese, active, coronary artery scan 0...
Routine blood test recently detected mildly elevated liver enzymes, follow up ultrasound points to fatty liver, upcoming elastography to assess fibrosis...
Again, can anyone identify with this and if yes, how was your situation managed?
Thank you!

A little different as none of my liver enzymes were up, but higher hdl, ldl and triglycerides for years with no treatment. An ultrasound for another issue show what they called fatty liver so I was send for a fibroscan which came back as no evidence of fatty liver and no infiltrations. My young son in law same thing but he has high elevated enzymes, just had his and it showed no fatty liver. Possibly ultrasounds are 'seeing' something else? Not sure but happy we both came back with no evidence.

2 Reactions@rushhome Thanks so much for letting me know about possible false positive results from the ultrasounds! I'll keep my fingers crossed for similar results!

4 ReactionsCould the “something else” be cystic liver areas? Evoist contrast (with & without) performed at a (university or cancer center) I believe is the best evaluation tool. This is sample of your health problem has my history of Fatty Liver which was dismissed because of my diabetes, then MRI alarm noting the cystic areas larging and finally metastatic Neuroendocrine Cancer diagnosed. I wish I had had the wisdom to advocate for more attention to the liver abnormalities - I feel that my Neuroendocrine cancer would have been treated earlier and the metastases probably avoided.
Be your own advocate, research, get specialists consultations and guidance. I wish I had!

2 ReactionsThanks so much for your reply. After reading about your experience I decided to look online for hepatologists at a major medical center and found 2 possibilities. Do you think my fibroscan scheduled for tomorrow would provide enough reassurance, or based on your experience would you seek a consultation with a hepatologist as well? The doctor who suggested the fibroscan is a gastroenterologist who performed my colonoscopy 3 years ago. He advised me that the fibroscan would answer the question of whether I would need to be referred to a hepatologist.
@tillymack: I do not have any history of the benefits of fibriscan; however, asking for a Evoist contrast MRI at a reputable university hospital/cancer center I believe would give you in-depth input into treatment options. I want the results of your next scan to give you pertinent results… not only lead to further tests. Hoping for your result of good healthy tissue!
