Anyone taking PPIs?

Posted by wandafanda @wandafanda, Jan 30 9:31am

My pulmonologist and gastroenterologist both want me to continue on Rabeprazole for 6 more months after trying it for 3 months. I am resistant as there are long term side effects from taking PPIs . After I started taking it for reflux and possible aspiration from GERD in October there was dramatic decrease in coughing and mucus production. So I can’t argue with the fact that it is improving my quality of life. Has anyone else experienced this? I would like to try kelp which is a more natural way to reduce acid reflux. Anyone using it?

@deb2230 I was in Scotland and used Gaviscon bought there and it was very effective. My gasto told me I should have stocked up to bring back to USA as it’s more effective than what we can get here. So glad to see this confirmed!

@dho75 yes so true! They sell Gaviscon Advance, which is different from regular Gaviscon or Gaviscon Strength that is sold here.
The Advance has a different formula with Alginates as prime ingredient.

@thorne Thank you!

I’m able to locate the Gaviscon Max and extra strength on Amazon. But not the Advance.
There is also a generic for Gaviscon called Gav Advance. Unfortunately this one does not list the amount of ingredients so I’m not comfortable buying that.

@blm1007blm1007 I have a moderate size hiatal hernia that was causing severe reflux. He put me on Nexium and that helped with symptoms. I was constantly coughing and clearing my throat on top of sore throat and hoarseness. That is what led me down the path to discover I had MAC. I’m convinced this reflux contributes to that. Surgery to repair that hernia is out of the question for me as too invasive as don’t like the after affects. Doctor said he wouldn’t have surgery either!

@dho75 For me I am constantly clearing my throat area by way of what I call gargling and sucking up what is in my throat because of the feeling of something clinging to the throat. I don't cough, what we consider a cough...what I do is to gargle/ draw it up or huff cough it up and out. I have been doing this for at least 4 years. So far no sore throat or hoarseness.

Before knowing about the wedge pillow and sleeping on ones left side, I slept on my back for ten years and I did wake up with a burning tongue and dry mouth frequently . I was breathing through my mouth at night rather than my nose. This is no longer happening. I take it it is because of my new sleeping position and taping my mouth closed with a small piece of sensitive skin tape (Nexcare 3M) secured on my facial skin above my lip and below my lip.
Any of this familiar.?
Thanks for your response.

@deb2230 Reflux Gourmet contains alginates and it's available on Amazon.com . https://refluxgourmet.com/the-science-of-alginate-therapy/

@scoop My gastroenterologist recommended Reflux Gourmet to me yesterday. Do you prefer the tube or the packets? Also do you think one flavor is better than the other? I’m leaning toward chocolate mint. Thanks!

@blm1007blm1007 Thanks Barbara. Yes, I do have wedge pillow but can’t get use to it as a side sleeper bit did know about the sleeping on left side.
Will try your clearing technique. There are days when it’s fine and days not so great.😊 Appreciate your advice! Drue

@susanp64 I’ve only tried the Vanilla Carmel flavor in the tube. It’s surprisingly delicious. I kid you not!

@rashida I just read your post. I was told at National Jewish Hospital, NJH, that I have a small hiatal hernia but not told to start PPI. The Bravo test performed at NJH did not indicate acid reflux. Just hope the test was correct, "ya just never know."

What were your symptoms that you feel the hiatal hernia caused before taking the PPI.?
Did you have problems such that you could describe as being caused by the hiatal hernia or was it a colonoscopy test that suggested problems and PPI's?

I don't think I have problems that could be associated with a hiatal hernia, but I might be wrong and wonder if you had specific problems that you were aware of before being told to start the PPI's.

@blm1007blm1007 the major symptom of a hiatal hernia is heartburn due to reflux. Sometimes heartburn feels like a heart attack, other times just a burning sensation in the middle of the chest. Other times, regurgitation of food or acid in the stomach.

I was given a barium swallow test to diagnose the hiatal hernia. I have been taking Lansoprazole (generic of Prevacid) for many years now. I read a lot that PPIs should not be taken long term but for me it is a daily necessity in addition to sleeping with the head of my bed raised (I have an adjustable bed). If I don’t continue taking my PPI I run the risk of getting Barrett’s esophagus.
