Intermittent fecal/sulfur breath odor
After scouring the web, I'm certain I'm not the only person with this problem, and not the only person who's been told they were imagining it. Anyway, the issue is I have intermittent odors when I talk (yes, I've been to the dentist 10+ times-- all say my oral hygiene is on point and xrays and inspections showed nothing). The only time it's practically non-existent is when I eat an unhealthily low-carb diet. Like others online, I've had CT scans, Barium swallows, endosocopy/colonoscopy, screening for parasites (getting one more from an IDS before crossing that off my list). All showed up negative. I tested positive for SIBO, but after researching that for the past 3 years, I'm certain SIBO is more of a symptom than a primary causal problem. Furthermore, even when I treated SIBO with heavy antibiotics, it did absolutely nothing for my breath-- and yes I was cleared of SIBO after a couple rounds of work. yet, the moment I eat carbs, I still get a "did someone just s*it themselves?" comment.
I guess what I'm getting at is I'm tired of doctors just saying it's IBS and SIBO and then proceeding to do zero investigating afterwards. I want to get down to the root cause of this, but most doctors are either too apathetic or too incompetent to do anything. Are there any researchers who specialize in studying and diagnosing hard to find problems in the GI tract? Between the 3 GI docs, 2 ENTs, 2 NDs and 1 IDS, I just can't take normal doctors anymore. I want my life back and I want a specific root cause so I can work on progressing from there.
Further notes: Diarrhea actually cleared up when I ate junk food and I had zero bloating, albeit the odor remained.
Xifaxan and neomycin did nothing for the odor, nor did the elemental diet. I actually think the elemental diet made the smell as bad or
worse than before.
*******Nitazoxanide********** worked wonders for the month I was on it. Solid stools even with foods that normally cause my ibs to flare up.
It's exactly the reason I felt there was more going on to everything than just SIBO and IBS.

my particular similar problem is greatly increased when consuming food and drinks containing sulfites (in their many forms) -- wine, spirits, beer, proceszsed foods etc. At times even sulfur ladened foods cause the same issue. Try searching on CBS SOUX. Black tea which i believe is dried with sulfur? is a problem but green tea is fine (with me anyway). I need to verify the catalyst with a medical expert but it coud be a gene mutation matter go do with procesing sulfur. Possible gene mutation matter...
I suffer the same issues and its awful!.. i dont know how i do it but its very embarrassing and as i read these comments couldnt help to laugh because it really fing sucks... i experience it every day after eating meats, dairy, certain veggies i havent had the discipline to figure out. I drink alot of water and trying to reduce sugar intake, now trying to avoid anything with corn. I read somewhere to avoid anything that can ferment. Also bacteria from the lower intestine has migrated to the stomach and esophagus causing early breakdown and sulfur breath or poop breath. Please let me know if you have looked into this and how your current treatments are going..
I am experiencing the exact same problems. For about 8 years now. I just went to the dentist a month ago. Nothing there is causing it. My dentist said there are three things that causes bad breath. Gums, nasal or stomach. The ent found nothing. Actually I have been to several ent doctors. Also several dentist. I’ve had several CT scans with contrast. They found nothing. I recently visits doctor who ordered blood test for amalayse. (I hope I spelled it correctly) It’s an enzyme that is made by both the pancreas and salivary glands. There is something about my saliva that I just can’t seem to figure out. It seems this is where the problem is. After finding out about the elevated enzyme she ordered an ultrasound of my abdomen. The results showed a dialated pancreatic duct in the distal portion. And a fatty liver. The doctor said it comes from eating too many carbs. My body does not seem to digest carbs and sugar. I am waiting on a CT scan . My insurance company denied it. So my PCP is sending me to a Gastroenterologist. Hopefully they will approve it. From what I have read on google. A dilated duct could be a tumor. Also high risk for cancer. When the duct is blocked the digestive enzymes are not released. I have always said my food is not digesting properly because can smell everything eat. My poop smells very bad. The smell is also coming through my nose. I know for sure it is in my nose and throat. My breath can fill up a room. It has a fecal/sour smell. I’m not sure if it is coming from my body. I have heard vitamin b2 may help. It is Riboflavin. I will keep everyone posted. I will have a phone conference on April 23 due to coronavirus. I hope to have the scan as soon as all this is over. My doctor just got my results from the sibo test. I hope to get those this week. Good luck.
Welcome new members, @basienka88 @dailysufferer @marci1117 @johnboade and @newports10. Such a frustrating unsolved issue. I'm sure most of you have googled the issue and the articles like this one provide nothing you haven't investigated. But just in case, allow me to post it here:

@catt8722 the article seems to verify what your doctor told you that bad breath comes from either gums, sinus/nasal passages or the GI tract/stomach. Here is additional information about amylase testing https://labtestsonline.org/tests/amylase
Thank you for keeping the group posted about your upcoming teleconsult appointment with the gastroenterologist. It sounds like the bad breath and your persistence in finding answers may help to solve a hidden issue with the pancreas. Telemedicine is becoming the norm these days. Please keep us informed. Just in case you still have your tonsils, bacteria, food etc. may accumulate in tonsil crypts creating “tonsil stones” that have a foul smell. Dr. Harold Katz (Los Angeles, CA) has a website and a line of products (There Breadth). I use a dropper to extract them, use water pick to rinse the tonsils or gargle with diluted mouth wash (Listerine).
My similar issue is brought on by consuming the range of sulfite preservatives in processed foods, wine, prosessed meats beer, etc -- they are everywhere. Sulfur ladened foods at times can initiate the problem like eggs and spinach cabbage etc but these foods are essential like sulfur intake so you would need expert medical advice there. B12 and B6 I take and molibedenum (spelling?) are handy -- try searching on CBS and Suox to do with sulfur pathways and genetic issues that may cause sufur processing problems. Even spirits like gin, whiskey etc can be problematic like casks are sterilized with sulfur before storage -- aged spirits are not so bad? as the sulfur content might reduce over time. Another example is black tea brings on the problem (i believe is dried with sulfur?) where green tea is fine. Maybe the incorrectly processed sulfur in my bloodstream is expelled in my breath. I find Kambocha helps so could be related to bad gut bacteria matters... I am certainly no medical expert but have found reducing sulfite intake greatly helps in my particlar case. Best to everyone, JB
it seems we all have been diagnosed with SIBO. We are all experiencing the same symptoms. Sulfur smell, bad breath (some fecal). Odor coming out of lungs and nose. Odor can fill a whole room.We all have similar trigger foods like sugar, grains, carbs, eggs, cabbage, fruit like bananas. COVID-19 has been a blessing in disguise. Being quarantined I don't have to worry about people saying what's that smell. I can eat what I want and not worry about it. Fortunately, I have the ability to work from home. I'm still searching for a cure. I will have to return to the real world eventually, then what? Starve myself all day and not eat, because food triggers a smell. I just wish the medical community would listen and understand it's not in our heads, too many of us have the same symptoms.
Hi, as above, my triggers are sulfite preservatives in lots of foods and drink -- wine beer dried fruit bottled lemon juice apple cider ...etc, etc at times sulfur ladened foods can cause the issue -- in my particular case. Definately had SIBO in the past.
Still around, still have sulfur bomb breaths. With social distancing, I haven't experienced the usual reactions from people. It was a good 3 months in that sense. But I was in a shop yesterday and a sulfur burning odor filled my mask. So a stark reminder that this problem is still around. A part of me wants social distancing and mask-wearing to go on indefinitely.
I have low level acid reflux and sinusitis. Nothing I have done or medication I have taken for these two conditions has ever had any affect on the sulfur bomb breaths.
Have you seen a GI and ENT?
