Experience with vaginal estrogen inserts

Posted by mygoodgirls @mygoodgirls, Mar 14 10:16am

I have er+ her2- grade 2 idc. Very early in my diagnosis and have not met with my oncologist yet.

I have been postmenopausal for maybe 9 years and suffered from very painful intercourse for years before my new provider told me about vaginal estrogen inserts and they did wonders for me. Changed my life...

Now I am devastated that I may not be able to use the vaginal inserts due to er+ status. (By the way, I tried the nonhormonal lubricants with no success.)

Is it anyone 's experience that oncologist approved of vaginal estrogen inserts with er+ status?

Right now I am mourning my breasts AND my vagina...

Any soothing advice/words of comfort?

Just know that you are the master of your own destiny. Now is the time to educate yourself thoroughly about breast cancer, your health, and proactive steps you can take to influence outcomes. If you want to use vaginal inserts, you should because who wants to live in misery? If your doctor won’t prescribe them, find another. I don’t use vaginal inserts myself, but I have been using the hormonal cream estradiol for years, and it’s made a remarkable difference. I would “never” quit using it. Yes, I had breast cancer, but I know that applying hormone cream locally is different from systemic use and does not increase the risk of breast cancer recurrence. I'm sure that the same is true with the low dose inserts! I guess what I’m saying is don’t be afraid to tell the doctor what you want and what you need it’s your life not theirs!

I can take estradiol inserts and I had ER+ breast cancer. My oncologist explained that they now know taking estradiol vaginal cream does not enter the blood stream thereby not causing a systemic concern for ER+ breast cancer patients. I believe the FDA has just removed the black box warning to the same effect.

My breast oncologist said it was fine for me to take the vaginal estrogen inserts for dryness and to help prevent UTIs. My cancer was ER+ and I have heart disease...but the cream is localized not systemic.
Glad to hear I can take it!
Hope you can too!

@mygoodgirls I have been using premarin vagcream for 20 years and I've been happy with how I felt. My recent diagnosis of a small breast tumor , followed by lumpectomy and soon radiation and then tamoxifen. My tumor is fed by estrogen and I was advised to stop the cream. I am in the process of finding a help for my 77 year old vagina. I had major pelvic surgery for enterocele, cyctocele ,lifting and realigning the vagina uplifted. At the time, I was started the premarin cream and was advised to always use it to keep vagina tissue healthy and stay uptight. This is very concerning and hope to find a suitable treatment . Thank you all for sharing .

When vaginal dryness became a huge issue for me, my gynecologist encouraged me to try using a small amount of an estrogen-based product. However, my lumpectomy made me too fearful of anything estrogen-related. My urologist recommended applying a pea-sized amount of Organic Virgin Coconut Oil to my vagina several times a day as well as taking 6 Desert Harvest Aloe Vera capsules daily . That was several years ago. Since then I have eliminated the aloe vera capsules and reduced the coconut oil application to once daily. I have no vaginal discomfort and haven’t even had a hint of a pink stain since that time. UTIs are a thing of the past.
