Diagnosed with MCI: Should I be super concerned yet?

Posted by ranchgirl3 @ranchgirl3, Feb 23 5:01pm

I just took the MoCa test at my doctor’s office and was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment. I will be turning 70 in 2 months. What that test doesn’t take into account is the minor disorientation I have from time to time. For instance, shopping at the market I have shopped at for 20 years, and I didn’t remember where the butter was. I’m a little concerned this is a bit more than MCI. Should I be concerned yet? i’m wondering if I should start planning for progression sooner rather than later.

@carolreid thank you! I am a planner, probably to a fault. However, I don’t like to be unprepared and this definitely needs preparation, at least in my mind. We live in a tri-level home in the woods with 2 dogs. I am wondering should we consider selling our home, go to a 1 story in town so my husband doesn’t have so much to deal with. If we decide to do that, I need to start preparing for that because we have lived here for 32 years, there’s a lot of “stuff” to go through while I can still “think it through”.

And you are thinking of all this while being the one with the cognitive decline! Kudos. My husband is the one. He doesn't know that he has a problem and can't see that things could go downhill fast. If something happened to me it would be a mess. Who would take care of him? And we've lived in our house for 42 years so I hear you about the stuff problem. On the plus side, it's a one story house and the size we are comfortable with. I am resistant to moving into an expensive small apartment in a facility away from my friends before we absolutely have to.

When I was concerned about my 60 yo hubby's "memory" ( i was 55) I got him to the doctor. At first I thought it was him being defiant or just teasing and playing with me when I would ask for something simple like ketchup and he would bring me something completely different. Or when I would ask for something from the frig and he would just stand there with the door open, staring, and then would shut the door. When that started happening more and more ( not all the time mind you) I was getting concerned. Because of hubby's age, I knew this wasn't "old age" forgetfulness. At first we were told it was MCI and after several visits (because things weren't improving with memory exercises , etc) more tests were involved and then my suspicions came true. He was diagnosed with Alz . So I say, please get tested. At least with a diagnosis you can prepare however you need to.

I also wanted to add since many people on this site have been asking about lequembe success (the infusions). I've gotten really good feedback on the lequembe infusions. but I found out yesetrday, that lequembe is 36 infusions, - I thought it was an 18 month treatment. Apparently, Kinsula treatments are 18 months. From what I'm reading, and hearing from other spouses in the room waiting for their partner on infusion day, they are seeing progress further into the treatment. Here's hoping ....... HOpe this helps.

@kjc48 It is 18 months but it's 2 per month. I just had my 4th. Many to go. But good news is that side effects are minimal (headache) and they already are reducing with each infusion. Maureen
