Have you been told no to hrt if you are 10+ years post menopause?

Starting hrt 10 years post menopause and the flawed Women's health initiative study.
I have been told no and yet the current findings seem to indicate that hrt can still help.

I was concerned about dosage and made a special appt with my GYN to see but she said from what she knew there was no way to overdose -- but I was not convinced. She said "Knock yourself out". Seemed sarcastic. So I use life extension's 25 mg 1 cap a day over the counter.

@sjs1 What is with these doctors? So disrespectful.

Having been a midwife, when I run across doctors like this, I know that disrespect = incompetent. I run from those doctors.

I'm sorry this happened to you.

it's funny i'm seeing this thread in my email - maybe it's an a i thing - because just yesterday I googled "can you do HRT 10 years post menopause and still get benefits for osteoporosis" and the answer was yes, just riskier in terms of heart. But to me the drugs themselves are so risky. Plus it seems like the quality of bone you build might be better with the HRT, not that rotten old bone not being removed that you get when you artificially shut down the osteoclasts.

@sl303 estrogen is primarily anti-resorptive. Progesterone has anabolic effect on bone. They are best at preventing loss of bone, but even together aren't anabolic in the way that Forteo and Tymlos are.

@sag59 Many of us have gotten HRT well into our 60's, me at 66. Doctor's are getting more savvy/accepting of this approach. My current general practitioner PCP prescribed it for me with no hesitation.

I suggest searching for some great recent posts by others on hormone replacement therapy.

I am 73 and have been on HRT for at least 8 years, started them about 15 years post menapause. The difference was amazing in how I felt on the HRT. I use a topical cream I apply daily to my inner thigh and take progesterone capsule at night. Have had no problems.

I am also 73 and may be needing to start something after looking at my BMD plummet towards osteoporosis after being fairly sedentary after a complicated knee replacement. I am thinking HRT would be a reasonable place to start. Have you had any side effects such as unwanted facial hair growth or weight gain?

@dorob, I am 75 and have been on an estrogen patch for 9 months. I have definitely gained weight and have never had to worry about weight gain before in my life. I also have ankle swelling and have to wear compression stockings. I feel better in other ways: skin, hair and vagina aren't as dry. My spine BMD is almost normal now and my hip BMD shows osteopenia after 7 fractures.

@dorob, I should have mentioned that I was on a half dose of Tymlos with the estrogen for 6 months. Estrogen appears to be holding in gains for 3 months so far.

Thanks for sharing this. Is it estradiol? Are you also on progesterone and testosterone?

Thank you so much for your response. It sure gets rough trying to navigate the options available regarding this disease. My first video visit with my bone consultant thru my neurosurgery doc is tomorrow morning. All blood work is normal. My femoral necks are the areas of significant bone loss edging near osteoporosis. I’m going to commit to doing regular closed chain kinetics to try and increase that trabecular bone growth before any jump into bone building meds if I can for awhile.
