Mucinex and Cough meds can cause confusion

Posted by boppi @boppi, Mar 8 2:56pm

My dear husband with vascular dementia was somewhat improved after getting hyperbaric trestments then he got a virus with chest congestion and cough. I gave him MucinexDM for the cough and his confusion was almost immediate. Took me a week to make the connection, thinking he was just feeling bad but when he stopped those meds, he rebounded within a day. READ LABELS if you notice changes with meds…wish I had made the connection earlier.

It’s the DM to be especially careful of. My wife with ALZ was coughing so I gave her a MucinexDM. It cause her to faint and I had to call 911 because I couldn’t wake her. She has a version of tachycardia and they suspect that the DM may have caused a brief heart block that caused her to faint.

It’s actually the DM in it or any cough med that makes it twice as bad. But regular Musinex bad too.

I just had my husband take Alka Seltzer Plus Cold, which doesn't seem to have any of the DM ingredient. He came down with his first bad cold in several y ears, so am hoping it will help those symptoms without causing any confusion.
