Hormone Replacement starting at 75yrs old
Doing reach, I have decided to try HRT with testosterone, very low dose. I’m in pretty good health, but was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rhuematica 2yrs ago. I’m Just trying to make a better life with what yrs I have left. There are so many positive messages out there, and yes I’m on the older side. I have 6 daughters and we have all been doing a lot of reading on this subject. Is there anyone else trying HRT at an older age?

I am also interested in postmenopausal HRT. But for insomnia. Has anyone used it for this, and had success sleeping again?
@judybradford
Yes. I have a bioidentical balance if estradiol testosterone and progesterone as well as vaginal estradiol cream. It helps me get more sleep as well as restful sleep. I started last year at 76 and I am closing in on 78. Good luck

The most research which I have seen on hormones and sleep has been on progesterone use as a HRT and pregnenolone as a supplement to boost hormones etc. Both have solid research around sleep and their use.
Pregnenolone pulls some major levers in the body, when it works it is great but if it pulls the wrong lever it can cause some side effects lke anxiety. Just depends on how your body uses it. Progesteone, not progestin, is more reliable. The oral progesterone, BHRT is converted in the liver to a sleep-enhancing metabolites called allopregnanolone. Topical progesterone is considered a natural sedative. The oral progesterone is subject to all of the changes of a first pass thru the liver making it more prone to side effects than the topical progesterone.
So of the 3, topical progesterone is probably the most conservative safety wise.
I am just starting HRT at 71. I notice most of you are also taking testosterone. I'm only doing progesterone and estradiol. How do you know which to do?
@pbradley1954
The amount of BHRT which I take is based on what my hormone tests say; I have used serum and saliva hormone tests; I prefer the saliva, at this point.
The saliva tests especially do better with topical HRT and they are becoming more and more accurate with the new saliva testing. IVF clinics, especially, are using the saliva testing for their patients.
Interestingly, I know a doctor who just prescribes testosterone for his menopause patients then he relies on the conversion of testosterone to estradiol and on down the line to estriol.
That did not work for me. I would love to just take prenenolone or dhea and let those supplements drive my hormone replacement therapy, but so far that has not worked for me.
So I use estriol/testosterone, progesterone and a small, very small amount of estradiol.
See the hormone conversion flow chart which shows that most hormones may convert to another one, except estriol. Probably one reason estriol is so safe during pregnancy and considered safe during menopause.
Testosterone will make you feel so much better, youthful, lubricated and if you’re prone to UTI’s this will generally stop them.
I started at 75 and I’m the one who got this string going for HRT replacement. I’m 77 now and doing great. I’m married 55 yrs, HRT helped immensely. I thank my 6 daughters for putting me on this amazing journey.
My mom bless her heart, she had nothing but UTI’s her whole elder life doctors put her on antibiotic for 15 yrs or so. If she had been on HRT she would not have suffered, she lived to 93.🌝

My main reason for including testosterone was this
I wanted my libido back. And testosterone provided that and more!

How much testosterone are you taking?
