Metallic taste in mouth
This all may sound strange… but I’m not sure how to explain it. About 15 years ago I started having a strong metallic taste in my mouth, felt like on my tongue. It would make me swollen constantly which led to tiny air bubbles in my mouth which I would pop with my tongue (strange, I know) I saw every dr, had so many tests, and nothing ever came of it except possibly ‘burning tongue syndrome’ no cure. I didn’t sleep well for many years. Then recently found out I had stomach ulcers.. went on pantoprazole and within weeks it went away!! I was thrilled… went off pantaprazole and went on famotidine. After two years of that, the taste is now coming back. Just so odd. And, if I’m busy, like on vacation and not thinking about it, I don’t have it…I know this whole thing sounds weird, just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this???

I have experienced such a taste while on antibiotics, while on eye drops for glaucoma, and if I am dehydrated.

4 Reactions@hleboyer, you might see a lot of theories and questions about the causes on this sight. Mine started out metallic, then went bitter and is now mostly salty. There’s a thread about salty.
Most of us haven’t been able to know the cause. I keep an open mind. Please post if you get any info about your condition. I’ve had my odd taste issue since September 2023.
In the slim chance this could help someone- I had what I thought was Covid-related strong metallic taste. But over time I realized it was a side effect of the mouthwash I was using- “CloSYS” brand, which uses Chlorine Dioxide.
Normal taste returned in a few days after stopping the mouthwash.
I assume affected the microbiome in my mouth.

I was having this metallic taste but not everyday. Realised it was the days I used a certain sunscreen.

1 ReactionI’ve reported my good news on other threads, but I wanted to include it here as well. Since my metallic taste started in Sept 2023 it has gradually lessened and now it’s a quite faint salty taste that I normally don’t think about for most of the day. I have no idea why. I’m grateful and hope it will completely resolve one day. Best wishes to you all.

The last three weeks I’ve been having very weird symptoms with my mouth feels like there’s like a hair on the tip of my tongue or something but nothing is there or like a little air bubbles makes me wanna scratch my tongue against my front teeth to make it go away for a few seconds lately. I’ve been having this metallic taste that comes and goes the first few hours. I wake up there’s nothing there, but it gets worse as the day goes on there is absolutely no pain. It’s just very annoying. Just like when you have a hair on the tip of your tongue it’s all you can think about. I’m not sure if I have that burning mouth syndrome as there is no pain I don’t really get the burning more like pins and needles and tingling as well as metallic that comes and goes.
My salty taste is so very faint now. Most days I hardly think about it. I suspect it may fade completely.
