Anybody diagnosed with microscopic colitis?

Posted by bobthebuilder54 @bobthebuilder54, Oct 12, 2011

Hi, wondering if anybody here has this for a dx. I have been having a flare for about two months, it is getting a little better with the meds but the doctor wants me to go on a short dose of steriods. I already have a muscle disease so hate to go the steriod route, (plus do not need to gain weight) lol. But if anyone has any hints for me I would appreciate it on how to control this. It is the longest flare I have had.

@donnagail It’s not the stomach but the intestinal tract. Green beans are really bad, as is broccoli.

@ndough Your comment demonstrates how very different we all are, and how varied are our food triggers. For me, green beans are the one very safe vegetable I can eat. Others are also safe, like potatoes, squash, well-cooked carrots. My biggest food problems are beans like kidney, garbanzo, pinto beans, etc., tomatoes, and raw vegetables. I can eat broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables in relatively small quantities and they have to be well-cooked. It's trial and error for all of us.

@debhammel You’re right. I can eat potatoes as well. What I really miss are the raw, fresh fruits and vegetables! My daily salads consisting of everything, Same with fruit. I would give anything to have my daily glass of POG again.

@ndough I guess I was just thinking, what goes in the stomach ends in the intestinal tract. I can eat green beans and snap beans.

@donnagail Sorry. What I meant was, I have to watch out for anything that affects my intestinal tract. My stomach is fine.

@donnagail I remember my Dr had me taking Cholestryramine for years when I first developed MC, more than 35 years ago. It was extremely effective for me, however I can’t take it now because I take thyroid med, blood thinners and who knows what else that doesn’t play nice with it. Not ever going on steroids though.

@ndough I have hypothyroidism, too and meds. I also started taking Cholestryramine. Am I not supposed to be taking the two together?

@donnagail Should be okay. Cholestryramine is for high cholesterol so don’t take it with other cholesterol med until you talk to your doctor.

@donnagail Depending on what thyroid medication you take, you may not want to take it wihtthe Cholestyramine. I'm on Armour Thyroid and Cytomel, and both say to take on an empty stomach and wait 30 minutes after to eat or take other meds.

@debhammel Actuaally, if you are on thyroid hormone replacement, you shouldn’t eat anything for an hour before or 4 hours after taking. Liquid okay if there are other meds you must take. That is some thing to discuss with your doctor.

@ndough I misspoke, you shouldn’t eat any food or drink anything other than water for an hour AFTER taking thyroid med. Or, you can eat & drink, but then wait 4 hours before taking thyroid med (on empty stomach).

@debhammel Thanks. I take my thyroid med when I first wake up early in the morning beforecI actually wake up. I also take probiotics and work that 2 hours out from everything else.

I just asked AI if budesonide could cause my atrophy of the pancreas and duct dialation and it told me unlikely, but did say atrophy of the pancreas is often mistaken for microscopic colitis. I found that interesting. Of course a colonoscopy is the real tell-all to confirm MC. I do think the pancreas is a secondary cause of my diarrhea. I feel like I am falling apart sometimes. It sucks getting older...

@ndough apparently there's some leeway with this. I am following the directions given to me by my PCP.
