Ruptured aortic aneurysm after kidney transplant

Posted by barbara97 @barbara97, Feb 6 2:29am

My husband had a bilateral lung transplant, sepsis, then kidney failure in 2025. He had a kidney transplant 01/23/2026. He had an aortic aneurysm before all of this with no problem it was 4.1 but stable hadn’t grown in 2 years While in the hospital (just 2 days) with the kidney transplant, they stopped giving him his 2 blood pressure medications all together. I questioned the nurse and she said they weren’t ordered by the doctor. She said normally they stopped them to make the pressure in the new kidneys go up so they would start functioning properly.. he was set to go home Monday 01/26/2026. Around 12:30 am he started complaining of it hurting went completely stiff and died right in front of me, holding my hand. Cause of death is aneurysm rupture. I am beside myself with grief. And the hospital cant give me a straight answer, why they quit giving him his medication.
Has anyone else experienced dissection after stopping their BP medications?

I feel sad to read this. While I have no answers, I offer prayers for peace, comfort, and strength. You are loved and supported, Anthony

I can not believe how difficult this must be. Truthfully, if it were me, I would follow up with the hospital and doctor. He had to have been put on a verity of drugs after the transplant (anti rejection etc.), , they had to know he was a 'watch' for his aneurism , and that he had been on BP meds. This really sounds very neglectful. The nurses have to follow the doctors orders- but did the doctor look at all of his orders before he discharged your husband. With all the work they did, why not follow closely ??? I pray you get through this , God bless you as you navigate this loss.

Horribly sorry for this outcome. Praying for your strength and clarity to see if Negligence is the reason. Did someone order no BP? Didn't they know? Your husband had alot of intense surgery. May God give you wisdom to get clarity but hoping relatives /friends to help. It sounds very neglectful.... Follow up with dr. and attorney (medical). for full accountability, (when you can think). So sorry , heart is breaking

Sorry to read about your lost and trama. I was told a sudden increase in blood pressure could risk a dissection but mine was larger then 4.1. The way my doctor explained was there was really no way to know bc people dissect lower size and at my size and people live their whole lives with bigger and smaller. Not sure you will able to ever get a true answer.

@cheri53 every time the nurse gave him his medicine she told us what each one was. He was already in tacrolimus for the lung transplant but they went way up in that and added celcept. The first time she gave him his medicine there wasn’t BP meds and I ask her what about that. Her answer was the drs hadn’t ordered any. U told her then about the high BP and aneurysm. She said she would page them and find out. Nothing. Same thing every time they gave him medication. I ask the same question and got the same response. And on Sunday about 6 hours before he died they had to give him blood. They said his hemoglobin had dropped for “some reason” exact words. I’m lost and maybe over thinking it all but it doesn’t seem right I need satisfactory answers.

I am so sorry to hear of your tragic loss. My deepest sympathies to you. And thank you for sharing your story. I am facing back surgery and I have a 4.1 ascending aortic aneurysm too. Your story has educated me and helped me understand that I need to discuss this risk with the surgeon before I undergo surgery. Many blessings to you.
