Oral Lichen Planus food/drink triggers
Greetings!
I've just re-read EVERY post & response here re: OLP, and made a list of multiple meds and treatments that folks have found helpful. I am still searching for the one that will be helpful to me 🙁
I am currently doing Dry January, and was sure that completely removing alcohol (along with eating much healthier this month) would resolve my symptoms. However, this has not been the case and I'm immensely frustrated.
I am a pescatarian (basically vegetarian with seafood) and fresh fruits and veggies, along with grains and dairy are mainstays of my diet. I'm fairly devastated to hear that so many of you have reportedly had to give up many of these.
So, I'm curious to know WHAT foods and drinks have definitely caused issues for you. I'm ready to do a trial of no dairy, which will be a challenge. But giving up mushrooms and fresh fruit will be quite the challenge. I've already stopped anything minty, including cinnamon in my oatmeal, and spicy foods.
Thanks in advance for your input,
Holly

@hem1959 I am so sorry to hear that! Your tube looks different from mine but the main ingredient, Fluocinonide, is correct so it must be a different manufacturer. Each company’s formulation is different so you may be reacting to something else (some other ingredient) in it - or perhaps the Fluocinonide itself. Please stop using it and go to ER right away, if you cannot get an appointment with the doctor who prescribed it soon enough!
In my case, I know that mushrooms in anything can cause a flare so I don’t eat them or eat anything that has been cross contaminated with mushrooms.
@kmm29 - The funny thing about hydrogen peroide is my dentist said I could use it. He said it "toughens" the gums. It took awhile to get to the point of using it without a lot of pain and it still will sting sometimes. I always make sure I have filtered water to rinse afterwards. I plan on talking with my periodontist about the dexamethasone issue. Thanks for your input.
@sadea0208 Love your attitude. I also have ELP, BMS, OLP and Lichen sclerosis, somehow related to Lichen Planus. No one seems to know how, but it's all soft tissue related for me. I also have to get EGD's several times a year- Have they suggested you use Flovent HFA or since that is no longer sold in the U.S., an alternative to use off-label to coat our throats? I have had to order from Canada. It's expensive. I'm in the Chicago area- you?
I have had what I thought was oral lichen planus for over a hear. My mouth was broken out everyday for over a year. canker sores bumps on tongue break outs on saliva glands, sore all the time and it hurt. I had quit using any kind of mouth was and knew I had trouble with vitamin C so stayed away from that. BUT I finally gave up and started using Listerine again and started eating 3 orange's a week. The sores have gone away. I have no clue if it was the mouth wash or the oranges. but it is gone. For now away. My mouth cleared up and it has been two weeks with NO break out. I am totally surprised.

3 Reactions@chrisanon what is ELP, BMS, EGD and HFA?
I am new to OLP.
After reading all your posts I have come to the conclusion that I need to manage my OLP better to help prevent my flare-ups. My morning routine consist of one full glass of lemon water followed by a cup of coffee one hour later. I still periodically eat spicy food (just can help it). Apparently these drinks and foods are a no no for OLP. Brushing my teeth with regular tooth past is nothing short of ouch! I know now that there are options for this after reading all you posts. I wish my doctor would have explain this to me when I was diagnosed. My first battel with OLP consisted of leaning over the sink holding my lips away from my gums and dowsing with cool water it was so very painful. The meds that you all talk about have never been discussed while at my doctors appointment so I will be looking into that ASAP. Thank you all very much.

4 Reactions@gary2026 hi Gary! I too used to start my day with lemon and ginger water. I have had to give up many things I previously loved but there is really no option if you want to control this frustrating condition and not have it turn into erosive OLP. I have also switched from regular coffee to a combination of low acid coffee and roasted chicory. Anything even mildly spicy aggravates my mouth. And I must avoid anything very acidic.
Rinsing with warm salt water and Xylitol has really helped me. And also a dexamethasone oral solution as a swish and spit. NOTE, make sure it is sugar and alcohol free. My doctor initially called in the dexamethasone elixir which has alcohol in it and made my condition worse. Best of luck to you!

1 ReactionI guess I need to really start changing my diet to avoid flareups. This recent one has been quite painful. I will test the mushroom trigger when I can. Thank you. Thank you God for the low acid coffee suggestion I didn't know if I could survive without coffee.
For now, Carry On! and Still I Rise!

2 ReactionsI had OLP for over a year, my mouth was constantly broke out either from cankor sores, rashes, bumps on my tongue, open sores on my saliva glands. Sore and broke out all the time and I was frustrated 4 doctors different ones. Two different dentist, a periodontists, an EMT, and no answers.
I have been on a keto, intermitant fasting sense 2018, I had also stopped using any kind of toothpaste and all over the counter mouth washes. Eating no citric fruit and staying away from carbs especially ones that have sugar in them.
So a month ago I had a thought, maybe I was not getting enough vitamin C, I am allergic to certain kinds of vitamin C so try to stay away from all ot if becaue I don't know which one I have trouble with. Anyway I got some oranges and ate two of them, within 24 hours my mouth cleared up. Also at the same time I bought listerine freshburst mouthwash. I was tired of my mouth hurting. I don't know if it is the oranges I am eating or if it is the listerine mouthwash but my mouth has been cleared up for two weeks now. So I think I was missing vitamin C. BUT I do not know for sure. And because I had been keto for so long maybe somekind of nutrients were missing. I am still keto just eating oranges now.
I have no idea why this worked but I am thrilled that my mouth has cleared up.
Just my story.
