First appt for bladder cancer this coming week at Mayo Phoenix

Posted by dorothyb1153 @dorothyb1153, Jan 17 9:35am

Hello, I had bladder cancer a decade ago. Early stage. Treatment turbt. I just found out I have a recurrence during yearly cystoscopy. I’m switching from my urologist to Mayo in Phoenix. I wasn’t scared last time but feeling very anxious this time. Any tips, questions or suggestions for my first appt at Mayo? My appt is with a PA-C. Will I be assigned a urologist oncologist. Thank you for any encouragement or suggestions. Dorothy

Mayo is amazing. I had first appt with urologist/oncologist last Thursday. They fit me in for surgery which I had on Monday. They scrambled all day Friday to get labs and tests done from 8 am - 8 pm.

I just got my notes from the surgeon Dr Mark Tyson and the diagnosis is malignant neoplasm of bladder (HCC) so that’s concerning.

They did a chemo wash before I went home and still waiting for biopsy.

They did prescribe belladonna opium for spasms so I’ve been pain free. And I asked to not go home with a catheter and he was fine with that.

@dorothyb1153 I’m glad you got to experience how the Mayo Magic gets things done quickly. So sorry about your diagnosis but fingers crossed for non muscle invasive. No catheter going home? My husband would support that 150%! Riding in a car for 10 hours with catheter is something he hopes never to do again. Stay positive and comfortable.

@sepdvm yes there were two things I was going to plead for since this is my second turbt.

1. No catheter going home
2. Prescription for belladonna opium for muscle spasms.

I was given both requests

Dr. Tyson did my Radical Cystectomy. You have one of the best surgeons you can get. Whatever the result of he biopsy, you will get the absolute best treatment. Stay strong.

@ronzee50 he seemed wonderful and it was less painful than previous recovery from my then urologist.

He conducts several clinical trials so if needed I’d hopefully have a good chance.

Still hoping for an easy to test outcome.

It's good to be in the right place at the right time. My previous urologist said he could do my surgery but it was best to have someone who does way more than him. Dr Tyson was one of two that he told me would be the best to do it. Plus, his demeanor just makes you feel that he has things under control.

Thank you for your comment. I did not know Mayo was in Phoenix, Arizona, where my son lives close by. I live in Illinois so I will definitely be making an appointment there since I have lots of questions about this bladder cancer.

@catpaws1948, Mayo Clinic has several locations, including in Arizona, Florida, Minnesota and the mid-West. See all here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/locations

@dorothyb1153 This is good news regarding your experience. I am scheduled for a TURBT tomorrow and a terrified. I am so glad to hear that you are pain free and did not have to have a catheter. I have read way too much info on the catheter and pain after a TURBT. I am sending strength for your continued treatment. Sadly I am not within the Mayo system, but may have to find a way to get in it.

@michzn hoping you have a smooth experience and advocate for yourself before they put you under. I asked to not go home with a catheter and I knew what pain meds worked a decade ago. Only needed to take one. Keep us posted. ❤️🙏
