First appt for bladder cancer this coming week at Mayo Phoenix
Hello, I had bladder cancer a decade ago. Early stage. Treatment turbt. I just found out I have a recurrence during yearly cystoscopy. I’m switching from my urologist to Mayo in Phoenix. I wasn’t scared last time but feeling very anxious this time. Any tips, questions or suggestions for my first appt at Mayo? My appt is with a PA-C. Will I be assigned a urologist oncologist. Thank you for any encouragement or suggestions. Dorothy

I also go to Mayo Phoenix. Not really sure how your journey will go. I first saw a surgeon, Dr. Tyson. This is probably because I was referred by another urologic surgeon. Your PA-C will end up being your primary contact. He/She will get you to see the right department people as needed.
I already had an oncologist. I did see an oncologist at Mayo. He was very familiar with my oncologist so I stayed with her. If you had your records transferred, they will be on top of your condition before you get there. You will be in the best place for treatment.

3 Reactions@ronzee50 thank you so much for sharing your experience with Mayo. They’ve been very responsive so far. I only ever had a urologist. Not an oncologist. So I’m hoping I get a good team that will also scan a mass I have on my ilium that is slow growing but does tend to light up. I have seen an oncologist for that and she’s no longer working with anything except breast cancer. My appt is in a few days. Dorothy
Mayo is excellent so you are very lucky. Take it one day at a time. What happens, happens. We have no control except to follow medical advice. Hang in there! Enjoy to relax, walk, read books, watch shows, eat healthy. And trust in the process.

2 ReactionsHello @dorothyb1153. My husband's bladder cancer experience is at Mayo Rochester but I echo the others in saying that you will have the best of care and doctors at a Mayo facility. The way they arrange for you to see who you need to see, have the scans and tests, and rapid results is pure magic. Good luck with this next step in your cancer journey.

1 Reaction@dorothyb1153 Well, I'm at Mayo Scottsdale right now. Sending a virtual 👋
Thank you for your comment. I did not know Mayo was in Phoenix, Arizona, where my son lives close by. I live in Illinois so I will definitely be making an appointment there since I have lots of questions about this bladder cancer.

2 Reactions@dorothyb1153 how did your initial appointment go? Do you have a treatment plan?
Mayo is amazing. I had first appt with urologist/oncologist last Thursday. They fit me in for surgery which I had on Monday. They scrambled all day Friday to get labs and tests done from 8 am - 8 pm.
I just got my notes from the surgeon Dr Mark Tyson and the diagnosis is malignant neoplasm of bladder (HCC) so that’s concerning.
They did a chemo wash before I went home and still waiting for biopsy.
They did prescribe belladonna opium for spasms so I’ve been pain free. And I asked to not go home with a catheter and he was fine with that.
