Recovering from alcoholism
Hi @brit I see that you define yourself as an alcoholic. I also am a recovering alcoholic with 30 years sobriety. I do work a 12 step program and attend weekly meetings. I have to stay close to my home group and recovering friends or I know I will drink again. I think we have much in common as I also live in a cabin in the woods which I love. Being in nature helps to relieve my anxiety and depression. Like you, I have suffered from major depression and anxiety for all of my life. Everyone in my family has also suffered from this so I think it is chemical and in my genes, too. Also, like you, I have a wonderful, supportive and helpful husband who also works a 12 step program although he is not an alcoholic. As for your tongue problem, I have a tendency toward yeast overgrowth especially if I am taking an antibiotic. For this reason, I also drink Kefir daily and take a prebiotic and a probiotic. Before bed, I rinse my mouth with a mild peroxide solution. This keeps it at bay. Glad to hear you are doing better. Stay in touch and stay strong.

The main things to avoid to prevent yeast overgrowth are sugar and carbohydrates. As far as my mouth is concerned, highly acidic foods seem to be the culprit such as tomatoes, oranges and fresh pineapple. Taking a probiotic and a prebiotic in pill form will certainly not hurt you but there are foods that you can eat instead of these. A good probiotic is yogurt but you have to carefully read the label to make sure it contains live cultures. Good prebiotics are bananas, apples, asparagus, onions, garlic and flax seed. Every night after I brush my teeth, I rinse my mouth with a mild peroxide solution. You also need to keep your toothbrush sanitized and replace it often. About once a week, I dip mine in peroxide. Yes it did help thanks so much. Something I have learned also is Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in water and swish it around in your mouth for about 30 seconds. I remember when I was little my parents use to drink a small glass of diluted vinegar once a day. I have been doing so that and that has also helped with the over growth. Your message to me made things a lot clearer and again I appreciate it.

Thank you to every single brave person here who is saying they are an alcoholic. I am in the mental health group and just now have had to ask for support in dealing with an alcoholic husband who admits he is....but swears it does not affect his decisions...behavior....and ability to make a living. I see that those of us in a few forums can catch up on a person'shistory by clicking on their name and following them. So i won't go through the recent trauma have been experiencing.
I have been to so many groups. Why do alcoholics let their wives leave them.

Hi, @georgette12 - just wanted to check back with you about your husband you mentioned is an alcoholic. If you are comfortable sharing, how is he doing lately? Sounds like you are feeling like his addiction to alcohol is indeed affecting his decisions, behavior and ability to make a living, but he does not agree?
