Severe long term side effects from head and neck radiation

@mysister Cuanto lo siento mysister, es difícil y complicado poder tener una vida agradable en situaciones como la tuya pues según dices nadie por el momento es capaz dé buscarte una mínima solución a tus problemas y es imposible entender qué en pleno siglo XXI no haya nada ni nadie que sé ponga a buscar y ha investigar las posibles soluciones aunque sea parcialmente. Éso sí pará gastar miles de millones dé dólares en guerras y en subir al espacio no tienen ningún problema.
Hacé 15 años me detectaron un tumor canceriregeno en la lengua después dé haber estado en varías ocasiones en consultas dé dermatólogos y dentistas al menos durante tres años antes dé qué lo descubrieran y además con distintos dermatólogos y ninguno supo tomar un diagnóstico relacionado con la posibilidad dé qué fuera un tumor canceriregeno todos los diagnóstico eran lo mismo, herpes lingual o liquen plano, tratamiento, un gel vaya ojo clínico dé los doctores hasta que por desgracia en una última consulta él primero que me vio cuatro años antes me dijo que éso tenía mala pinta y me mandó hacer una biopsia, y mí pregunta es, éso no lo podía haber hecho cuatro años antes y claro ahí fue dónde él resultado fue catastrófico para mí, vaya nivel médico dé estos dermatólogos.
Bien como consecuencia dé todo esto fui intervenido quirúrgicamente y posteriormente un tratamiento dé radioterapia con una dosis elevada pues me aplicaban dos veces al día mañana y tarde y dé refuerzo tres sesiones dé quimioterapia alternativamente con la radioterapia. Todo esto té lo cuento porque ahora quince años después los efectos y las secuelas qué me han dejado los tratamientos son criminales, también cómo a ti me han tenido qué implantar un sonda a través del vientre para poder alimentarme a basé dé batidos al no poder tragar nada por boca debido a los importantes daños sufrido en toda la estructura dé la boca decirte también qué posterior al tratamiento estuve bastantes años alimentándome a base dé purés y alimentos triturados, al menos ésto lo llevaba bastante bien pero con él pasó dé los años todo fue empeorando hasta llegar al punto en el que me encuentro hoy haciendo una vida bastante desgraciada pues cada tres horas tengo qué inyectarme el batido con la jeringuilla y entré media tengo qué inyectarme agua, así qué cómo verás estoy todo el día sin apenas poder moverme dé casa, un paseo por el parque más cercano dé mí casa y no más. Psicológicamente hay qué hacer un gran esfuerzo mental para no caer en una depresión y eso es lo que té puedo recomendar.
Ah sé me olvidaba decirte que yo tampoco apenas puedo hablar porque nadie entiende lo qué digo y la verdad que lo paso fatal por no poder comunicarme con la gente.

@jubilta77 you have my deepest sympathy for your plight. 15 years is a long time to endure what you've been through. It was very negligent of the doctors to not investigate further when the lesion didn't go away. There was no excuse to let it go on for 4 years. When I went through it 20 years ago for a lesion on the base of the tongue. They were rather ignorant on the matter as it was a rare thing. Incidents have more than doubled since then. Aside from the usual problems of having your mouth and throat burned from radiation and your body poisoned by chemo, I learned to live with the deficits. A few years back, a side effect of the radiation has left me with uncontrollable blood pressure. I'm constantly chasing the symptoms of extreme highs and lows, and it will eventually lead to as stroke or heart failure. Still, I consider myself to be fortunate that I've had these many years. I haven't suffered as others have that I've met here. I've gotten to watch my grandkids grow and live a life on borrowed time. I have found that being grateful for what I have helps to stave off depression, though there are times it is difficult, especially when the body reminds me it's been through hell. I hope you find bright spots in every day.

Pues me alegro qué lleves él problema con ésa actitud tan positiva yo también me esfuerzo lo máximo para llevarlo lo mejor posible.
Una pregunta: a tí también té han tenido que implantar una sonda por el vientre para poder alimentarte a base dé batidos normo proteicos y calóricos? Y cuanto tiempo llevas (sí es qué té lo han puesto) pues me gustaría saber sí se produce algún efecto secundario por el lugar donde sé instala la sonda, a mí me lo han implantando hace un año y cuatro meses y todavía tengo qué usar gasas y apósitos, dime también sí puedes beber líquidos por boca. Es cierto qué hace 15 o 20 años sé tenía muy poco conocimiento en este tipo de cáncer en la lengua y especialista había pocos y no muy buenos pero a día dé hoy está todo igual qué antes no sé ha avanzado nada en está enfermedad.
Otra pregunta, posterior al tratamiento podías comer más o menos normal o té pasaba como a mí qué ya me tuve qué alimentar a base dé comida triturada.

Good evening….Is there anyone else that is having dry mouth as side effect after chemotherapy and radiation treatment? Plus my weight is not getting back to normal after the treatment. I usually weigh 78kg but during treatment I went down to 67kg. My treatment was last year until October but until now I only added 6kg and I’m now at 73.5 since December there’s no improvement

@linda90 Hola @linda90 yo tengo la boca seca por la ausencia dé glándulas salivales como consecuencia dé la radioterapia y la intervención quirúrgica, los efectos secundarios y las secuelas van creciendo con él paso del tiempo y en estos momentos ya no puedo tomar ningún alimento ni líquido por boca desde hace ya dos años, pero ése es mí caso yo no sé cuál es tu problema con respecto a tú enfermedad pero sí es en la zona orofaringea la radiación té va a producir una importante fibrosis cicatrizal, pero si puedes tragar alimentos y bebidas llevarás una cálida dé vida bastante mejor que la que yo llevo y poco a poco irás cogiendo peso en mí caso perdí 20 kilos en los últimos cinco años y hoy ya he recuperado 15 alimentándome con batidos especiales a través dé una sonda implantada por él vientre, por tanto ten fé y esperanza y sobre todo consúltale a tú oncólogo cuáles son los problemas que té va a causar la radioterapia y la quimioterapia para qué no té lleves sorpresas desagradables.

@jubilta77 I was 49 at the time and age seems to make a difference in one's recovery. I had the g-tube in for about 4 months and still lost 40 lbs. I didn't have any problems with it, but then again, I was heavily medicated for much of the time, and nothing bothered me much then. The only side effect that I noticed is that it appears there was adhesion between my stomach and abdomen muscles from scarring. Eating was and is a bit of a challenge, primarily due to dysphagia and aspiration. Apple peelings and crumbs caused the most havoc. Things have gotten much better and even my saliva production has slightly increased. Sadly, my sister went through the same thing, and her outcome has been much more disappointing. It returned and she is in hospice care now. Life can be brutal.

@linda90 I had my last radiation and chemo in September. I still have severe mouth pain and dry mouth. No Idea how long I have to deal with it. One Dr told me it could be permanent. In that case it looks like another feeding tube is in the near future

Although it was 15 years ago when I was diagnosed with parotid (salivary gland) cancer, after surgery, I refused chemo and chose proton therapy radiation only. The radiologists wanted to do chemo at the same time of radiation. I was told a feeding tube would be required. There was a possibility of never being able to swallow again. I took my chances. I still have numerous problems from radiation but adding chemo would have been catastrophic for me. I believe in quality of life over quantity. That is a personal decision that we each must make.

@roadtecguy Sorry you are not doing much better with your recovery by now. The dry mouth can really be a torture sometimes, especially in winter when the air is dry at night when trying to sleep. I myself carried a water bottle everywhere, including a little three ounce bottle to get on airplane flights. It is very hard to get used to dealing with dry mouth. The mouth sores don't help in that regard either. Hopefully at the six month point you are doing better.
