What is the best way to clean around an ileostomy stoma?
I have been using Origins Checks and Balances. It is intended to be a face wash. It is easy to rinse off and leaves the skin feeling very clean without any hint of lotion or residue. I see others are recommending Ivory soap. I think I tried that early on, but I will try it again. Any other recommendations?
Also, I have been removing the pouch, then showering and washing the area around the stoma carefully. Then drying off and using adhesive remover to get any remaining adhesive off before applying the new pouch. I am thinking maybe I should use the adhesive remover first then shower and wash the area.
Which way works best for you?

Do you use h&s?
@dona46
No, that is a suggestion from a WOCN + positive comments on Inspire (including the Classic tip).
Originally I used Hollister/Adapt stoma powder with 3M/Cavilon skin barrier on rashes around my stoma. Now I am using Flonase (yes, the nasal spray!), which works better. Two caveats:
If the rash persists it may be fungal. Tip for that? Athlete's foot medication (clotrimazole). Again from WOCN/Inspire.
Also I use it sparingly only when needed. I read the fine print and it contains a glucorticoid. Personally I am very sensitive to steroids (including topical) and there is at least a theoretical possibility that excessive use can cause thinning of the skin.

Oops. The thought that got lost as my draft response repeatedly disappeared was the explanation that I just use water for regular cleaning + have an adhesive remover wipe to clean up residual adhesive. So I do something special only when I start to develop a rash.
I used h&s one time on another area of sensitive skin and the skin got irritated.
I use Ivory soap when I use soap. But mostly I don't use soap at all, just rinse with water.
As long as the soap isn't leaving a residue, or drying your skin, it probably doesn't matter which brand you use.

1 ReactionTo clean around my stoma I use organic soap but after I have washed my skin I use alcohol wipes on my skin to get all bacteria off it, I had in the beginning before doing this my skin would break out under my flange. once I started using the alcohol wipes and making sure I didn't have any bacteria left on my skin I stopped having the little red rashes and pimples that would fester. I have been doing this sense 2017 and never had another breakout on my skin.
I usually clean around it w/ tissue paper and bath wipe. -
I had an ileostomy for 6+ months. Thankfully, I was "re-connected." When I had the ileostomy this was my routine: every other day in the morning, before coffee or even a drink of water, I'd completely remove the bag and ring. Then I'd clean the skin around the ileostomy with medical adhesive remover. The product I used was Adapt from Hollister.
Meanwhile, I was running the water for a tub bath. I'd completely submerge myself (including the stoma), soak a bit, then wash my hair with shampoo once and dunk my head under the bathwater to get the shampoo off. Then I'd wash my whole body including the skin around the stoma (though not the stoma itself) with a washcloth only--no soap at all, except the shampoo already in the bathwater. Sometimes small amounts of small bowel contents would emerge from the stoma into the bath water, but more often, not. They weren't gross and I ignored them. Once clean, I got out of the tub, dried myself, carefully dried the skin around the stoma, then put on a new ring and bag.
In case you're counting, I changed my ring and bag more often than the recommended 3-4 days. I was happy with this personal care routine--and extremely glad when my ileostomy was reversed. I hope this helps. One other thing: It is important use adhesive remover--even if you don't see the adhesive on the skin. Otherwise skin pores get clogged, and that can lead to problems. Best of luck!
