What is the best way to clean around an ileostomy stoma?

Posted by dona46 @dona46, Jan 13 4:19pm

I have been using Origins Checks and Balances. It is intended to be a face wash. It is easy to rinse off and leaves the skin feeling very clean without any hint of lotion or residue. I see others are recommending Ivory soap. I think I tried that early on, but I will try it again. Any other recommendations?

Also, I have been removing the pouch, then showering and washing the area around the stoma carefully. Then drying off and using adhesive remover to get any remaining adhesive off before applying the new pouch. I am thinking maybe I should use the adhesive remover first then shower and wash the area.

Which way works best for you?

I have been using adhesive remover while removing the old pouch. Then after removing the pouch I use adhesive remover to remove any remaining adhesive on the skin. After that I shower with ivory soap and just before getting out of the shower I wash the area with Checks and Balances and rinse thoroughly. Then I apply Skintac to the local area that has had leakage problems in the past. This has ended the leakages. I think the adhesive remover needed to be washed off before applying the new pouch. At least for now the leakage problem seems to be solved. What a relief!

@20chermc I’ve heard that if you eat A couple of marshmallows About an hour before changing your bag slows things down. All the best to you.

I like to change pouches before breakfast. That is almost always quiet time for my stoma. I also do not eat or drink anything after 8:00 PM. That reduces the action while I'm in bed. I still set an alarm for 11:59 to avoid having a bag over fill during the night.

I used hydrogen peroxide on q-tips. Seamed to work well for me.
