Hormone Replacement starting at 75yrs old

Posted by curlyqlinda1 @curlyqlinda1, Jan 23, 2024

Doing reach, I have decided to try HRT with testosterone, very low dose. I’m in pretty good health, but was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rhuematica 2yrs ago. I’m Just trying to make a better life with what yrs I have left. There are so many positive messages out there, and yes I’m on the older side. I have 6 daughters and we have all been doing a lot of reading on this subject. Is there anyone else trying HRT at an older age?

Ive been trying to wean myself off HRT but at 65 every time I try I get terrible sweating, feel hot, can’t sleep. Not sure what to do about it,some doctors want me completely off , my gynecologist says low dose ok.

@barscr2 I’ve recently started low dose at 68. I think the research has shown that denying get to our generation was not necessary.
My concern is more for osteoarthritis but I’m finding it to seriously improve aging skin. And now I’m realizing the psoriasis I’ve had for a while is improving dramatically.

Pleased that you shared this with us. I’m 67, suddenly came down with a severe uncontrollable anxiety disorder. Have had hot flashes for 15 years which must mean I have low estrogen. Met a wonderful ND who carefully reviewed by weight and size to determine the right amount HRT for me. Looking forward to it working for me. 🙏

Hi. I just joined the group because I saw your message and wanted to comment. I will be 76 next month. I was diagnosed with lupus and Sjogren's Disease in May of 2025, after many years of moderate suffering thinking I had just fibromyalgia. It was quite a shock, but not a surprise, if that makes sense. So the other day when I saw my wonderful rheumatologist she recommended I do HRT, which I have never done because I had seen years ago all the fright news about it causing cancer. She told me that has been proven to be not true, and that you can start HRT any time. She told me about a couple of her older patients who started taking it with positive results, and that one of them is a "new woman" now. So on Friday I called and left a message for the Nurse Practitioner I have been seeing, that I would like to talk with her about it. I really want to do it. What I am doing now, and why I found your message query, is online research about HRT for older women. I see your post is a couple of months old, and I am wondering if you did start HRT, and if so, how is it going for you?

@mizbev73 , OMG! That’s incredible! Can you PM me the name of the medical facility that doctor works at?

What were your symptoms that lead to Lupus and Sjogrens?

What are your testosterone levels. Many women overlook this important hormone.

@gravity3 I don’t know; so are you implying testosterone levels can cause anxiety?

No. I am not. However, these hormones, as we know, work in concert with one another. If I were in this situation again I would want to research this and speak with my provider about how estradiol, testosterone and progesterone work in the body together and whether using the three together may offer some help. I don't have the answers. I am not a medical professional. I am another women who is trying to cast the widest net of inquiry after being subjected to the holes in my treatment caused by the flawed women's health initiative study. At 77 I am interested in it all. One of the many things that I value about this forum is that I am learning all of the time and I am always surprised what I have paths I have not investigated and the someone pops up with a question I have not asked or a path I have not explored. If you don't mind let us know what you discover
Thanks.

@gravity3 I will be seeing my ND to follow up on the HRT treatment that I have been on for about 2.5 months . Unfortunately I don’t perceive any positive effects so far. I’ll ask her about the testosterone . The dose of progesterone that I use is higher than than the estrogen -apparently that is the one that should have a calming effect. Stay tuned.
