Body vibrations when falling asleep or waking?
After many google searches for the reason I feel vibration in my head, shoulder and arm just before falling asleep and waking, I found nothing that satisfactorily explained it. Of course anxiety seems to be a common explanation but there was nothing specific enough to help me. I am currently reading Incognito by David Eagleman. It discusses the functioning of the brain as an organ. This morning, going through my routine to get ready for work, I thought of a way to understand the vibrations. Similar to the hypnic jerks we experience occasionally just before we fall asleep, I think the vibrations are intended to arouse me to stay vigilant. Which is the fight or flight mechanism in action. So there is the anxiety connection. Originating in the amygdala. I was thinking Parkinson's or MS but my symptoms don't indicate those conditions, thankfully. It seems counterintuitive to be anxious and sleeping at the same time but the brain can do that. The cerebral cortex sleeps but the life support systems of the brain must stay online, obviously. If you thought you were in danger, sleeping would put you at risk but at some point sleep becomes absolutely necessary. I think the vibrations I have been experiencing are caused by my sympathetic nervous system and not a neurologic disease. Thankfully !

@ckevlin yeah. It always happens for me in the morning around 4:00am as awareness is transitioning from dream state to physical waking state. It’s a very interesting sensation. Very loud in a full body energetic way. Obviously there isn’t any actual sound but static / humming and ringing sounds might be the best way to describe the sound. Floating and weightless would be the physical feeling that accompanies the vibration. It does feel as if one could float away.

2 ReactionsFor me, I think it's my body telling me I'm laying in a weird position for an extended period of time, as that's usually when it happens to me. I think it's sort of an anxiety thing as well, because it's connected to a buzzing noise, which is often correlated to a bee being nearby in my dream.
I started having this problem of "vibrations" seeming to radiate from my brain stem when falling asleep and waking up about 1 year ago. Doctors didn't offer much in terms of explanation or solutions. Suspecting that a prior head injury (hit my head on the bottom of a swimming pool) I went to a special type of chiropractor that focuses on the Atlas (top vertebrae C1) and the condition improved. Recently it has come back full force and like many here I have gone through countless lab testing, scans, evaluations, and found more that is normal than abnormal; which is comforting in some ways and frustrating in other ways. I have read this entire thread and my thoughts are that I'm dealing with some internal inflammation - perhaps due to a virus/long COVID effects as well as some low levels of Vitamin D and B12 and other nutrients so I am making adjustments to my diet and taking supplements. It's comforting to know that I'm not alone in this experience and I will follow up if I find a solution or ways to reduce it.

2 ReactionsI experience the same, my body Vibrates but only on waking, I have consulted my Doctor who thinks its some form of Tinnitus, However I think its probably something else as it only ever happens when I am waking up, as soon as I go about my daily business, its gone I hear of feel nothing, my Doctor who is very nice has no idea what it is, I believe it could be nerves as sometime I get a sharp ping in my arms I am taking Lyrica because I have neuropathy among others things like Osteoporosis, also Pre diabetic, which is probably my age as I don't take a lot of sugary foods, I am almost 76 years old so of course things are going to happen to my body as it gets older, this sensation of Buzzing/Vibrations only started about a year ago.
However when traveling or flying it was happening a few years ago but it would stop as soon as I was settled in the country I was traveling to, to the point I would ask my Husband to stop the Bed from shaking. Now its every morning, its a little scary, I thought it was perhaps my Nerves shooting around my Body, as they do would be nice if someone could tell me why this is happening
Y’all these vibrations, shaking, etc are still a mystery. They appear to be a chronic condition. I wonder if it could be a symptom of heart palpitations? My cardiologist just ignores my symptoms. Anyone anywhere.., can you enlighten me?

2 Reactions@dbamos1945 have you had a sleep test? I had similar symptoms and had a sleep test that revealed moderate to severe sleep apnea.

1 ReactionHi I have recently started to have these “zaps” just as I am about to fall asleep- it’s like a jerk of my head and can also be an arm or a leg. It is keeping me from falling asleep. Am exhausted most days and almost fear going to bed. I started Eliquis three weeks ago. I already suffered with mild tremors n thumbs and mouth from a previous incidental infarct and current very stiff and painful arthritis in neck. Sometimes wake up a bit shaky. Tremors
Not sure whether it’s a meds issue or to do with neck problem. I also suffer with pulsatilevtinnitus- so nighttime’s are very challenging at present. Only get about 4-6 hours interrupted sleep. The zaps are scary. Cardiologist denied Eliquis can be the problem. I know I am the ncreasingly anxious but who wouldn’t be?

G'morning Helene,
no I have not had a sleep test, its very expensive here in Australia to have sleep test, you need private insurance, which cost an arm an da leg, although I was told that I could have sleep apnea, as I was waking up every two hours to go to the bathroom, and that was the way my brain was sending out the alarm that I had stopped breathing, I went on a diet to lose weight and have kept it off now for over two years cutting out processed foods mostly, low sugar low carbs. I do wear a strip at night time on my nose to open up the airways which helps, I sleep very well now perhaps only waking once to use the bathroom other wise I sleep for at least 7 or 8 hours.
The thump thump thump in my head along with the Buzzing feels like my Brain will explode.
I have lots of what I would say small problems as I age, Neuropathy Arthritis Osteoporosis, High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol, taking Statins and Blood pressure medication.

1 Reaction@gloriadawn if you have a smart watches some will test for sleep apnea, I tested mine before I had a sleep test and it was positive. I also bought a sleep oxygen monitor with built in recording, it shows oxygen levels during the night. It goes on a finger, just like a pulse oximeter but it records your oxygen. They are fairly inexpensive and give you and idea of how low your oxygen levels are. Mine went into the 70s. I didn't wake up at night and thought I was sleeping really good until I saw the data.
