Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time

Posted by cindydee @cindydee, Mar 20, 2018

I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

All I can say is never again for Reclast! After 2 years, still struggling with shortness of breath, leg weakness and several other issues. Endo dismissed my complaint as Reclast couldn't have been the problem.

@takady I would seek out a pharmacist to consult with as they are more in tune with medication and side effects then any doctor. Remember, the doctors only study and learn about the treatment, not potential side effects. All’s I know is that I was feeling fine, just getting ready to retire, have infusion and the next day on it has been constant pain from one degree to another. Shoulders and left foot are the worse. There are also times that the burning sensation in and around bladder area is really bad. Not sure if that is from the Reclast or this Urolift that was implanted and most of it removed due to the constant burning. No one ever said that it could cause burning. In the future, any future treatments will require time, time for me to research and if I see any negative side effects, no way! We are all here for just a short while and I’m not going to stay here in constant pain from others hands!

Reclast last week. Never again. Horrible reaction like all those above. My hands have osteoarthritis and I am having so much pain in them now. I pray they will return to their prior condition. I’ve never had this much pain. I plan on taking calcium and vit.D daily. That’s it. No more.

@rngma1118 if I were you, I would request an explanation! Remember, no one else is going to advocate for you or better than you can yourself. When I told my endocrinologist that I was not getting any more treatment he requested that I come in and go over the pros and cons of receiving some form of treatment. As we age our bones do become weaker / brittle perhaps. However, I would prefer to live a bit of a productive life for as long as I can without having to spend my days with aches and pains and consulting with my physical therapist on ways to help me recover from the side effects from a treatment that I had received. I’m not sure what brought me to having a bone density test that started all of this. I do recall being told years ago, “ If it is not broke, do not fix it”. I can and will research any and all future treatments I receive when and where possible!

@dannyandebbie I'm totally in agreement with you. I firmly believe my last DEXA scan was erroneous to begin with, but even if it weren't my bone loss is not in the least severe and I have way too many other problems with my joints and spine to have any more aches and pains than I already have. With any of the treatments out there right now, I might as well reserve a bed in the local nursing home if I had to take any of them. Not for me. I prefer to exercise, eat as right as possible, and be very careful not to fall than to only be able to ache 24/7 and sit or lay down all the time. You would think our drug makers could make something that didn't have worse adverse affects than what they are intended to help/cure. Guess all that money we throw at them ain't going to research and development, probably in the CEO's pocket!
