Anyone have "cough variant" asthma? Vocal cord dysfunction?

Posted by jko1 @jko1, Apr 8, 2019

Anyone else on the forum with cough variant asthma? How about vocal cord dysfunction or the two together?

I have struggled with cough variant asthma for many years. Recently I was also diagnosed with vocal cord dysfunction as well--specifically irritable larynx syndrome. I've had voice therapy, but I'm interested in other ways people are coping with the combination.

Neilmed came with packets and instructions and you can also Googleit, but basically I sterilized the bottle by boiling it, used sterile water and mixed in 1 packet, shook gently and followed the instructions. It helps clear the sinuses. You have to make sure everything is sterile- you can buy sterile distilled water or boil filtered water for 5 minutes I think. You don’t want to use plain tap water. When I was in bad shape I’d use it 4-5 times a day. If I feel fine I don’t use it. Always a good idea to check with your doctor.

Thanks for the vocal cord dysfunction. My doctors sent me to speech therapy, which seems to be the most common treatment for vocal cord dysfunction. (Mine seems to be a variant known as irritable larynx syndrome.) Unfortunately, vocal cord dysfunction seems to be in the domain of ENTs, which asthma is in the domain of Pulmonologists. So far, the two groups aren't working all that well together on thinking through the interplay between the two and the appropriate treatments that best support both conditions.

@jko1 My 18 year old daughter is having the exact same issues and experience! Everytime we see a dr we get more confused, not clarified.

@clachow - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Sorry to hear that every time you and your daughter see a doctor, you get more confused and not clarified. How frustrating.

I believe you mean she has cough variant asthma and vocal chord dysfunction? If so, which doctor or doctors diagnosed those conditions for her? Does her primary care doctor have a suggestion for how to arise at an integrated treatment plan?

I do have a cough with asthma and COPD and high IgE but wondering if anyone is taking Dupixent and what is the outcome?

@lisalucier She was hospitalized for 7 days in the ICU and an ENT came in and saw that one side of vocal cord did not close properly. She goes to speech to learn breathing techniques.

@drsharon —does it help w/ chronic phlegm?

REPLY

I personally found it very helpful if the phlegm is coming from the sinuses. It won’t help if it’s only in the lungs.
