Is anyone taking Nuzyra for M. Abscesses or other?

I'm curious if anyone with M.Abscessus and has Medicare Advantage plan been approved for Nuzyra? Though, I am now testing negative for MABC, my ID doctor told me recurrence/reinfection is 50%. My current Medicare Advantage plan denied coverage last May for Abscessus. Also, my insurance broker told me that Bronchiectasis is an exclusion for Medigap, so at this time and unless things change, I'm stuck with Medicare Advantage. I have since learned that Nuzyra is not considered a standard treatment for MABC. which gives the insurance company a loophole in denying coverage. I'm trying to stay vigilant to avoid reinfection.

Hello: I was diagnosed with Mycobacterium Abscesses in September 2024. I started IV Amikacin, Azithromycin and Omadacyclin in June 2025. I started to get a loud ringing in my right ear after being on the IV Amikacin for 7 weeks. I was taken off the IV Amikacin in August. The ringing did not go away. Is there any treatment that can reverse of repair the damage caused by Amikacin? Are there medications or supplements that have shown any benefit for drug induced tinnitus? Has anybody else experienced this?

Hi, I have been treated for Abscsses since June 2025. Recently taken off IV Amikacin because it causes permanent hearing loss. On Nuzyra, Clatithromycin, Aryikayce and Brinsupri. ID doc getting insurance approval for another oral pill. I am not getting better. In fact maybe worse. Is anyone short of breath, coughing and bringing up mucus all day long and on oxygen 24/7?

@kathyjjb I have traditional Medicare Supplement Medical Mutual and my script plan is WellCare. WellCare has covered Nuzyra and inhaled Arikayce. My ID had to complete extensive request information. Can you switch to traditional from advantage and choose a script plan?

I am sorry to hear that you are not getting better. Do you have an ID doctor at Mayo? Mayo seems to know the combination of drugs that can help to battle this. When I was taken off the Amikacin due to the hearing loss, I was put on an IV antibiotic called Imipenem. I will not regain my hearing, I am told.

Thank you for responding. My ID dr is at Temple in PA referred by my pulmonologist at the Temple Lung Center. I was also told Amikacin causes permanent hearing loss which is unfortunate because I have tinnitus in my other ear. Now put closed caption on tv so I can understand what they are saying.

Hello, I suffered with tinnitus due to hearing loss from Amikacin. I just recently received hearing aids that are supposed to help with tinnitus. I also use closed caption for watching tv.

@rizzinator Has your ID doctor done any recent susceptibility testing? When I was diagnosed with Abscessus, mine was resistant to macrolide antibiotics which is fairly common.
