Does anyone have hyponatremia?

Posted by maggie76 @maggie76, Nov 15, 2025

I was diagnosed with very low electrolytes and was in hospital for three days getting sodium in a IV. It worked and I came home within a few months my sodium was low at 125.

Hello again, I saw Nephrologist yesterday for blood work and my sodium has gone up from 127 to 129. He said to stay on the Urea and watch my BP.
I will look for the protein powder. I don't drink coffee, just tea so I guess I could use it in there. As for protein I try to have it at every meal. I'm not a big meat eater, so have been having high protein plant based dinners. I have a hard time taking 8Urea pills a day as they raise my BP so he said take 6 per day and watch your BP.
I live in S Carolina, where do you live?
Take care of yourself and thank you for sharing.

@maggie76 I've just turned 80 and my health has been turned upside down in a 3 month period. Just to focus on the Hyponatermia--I had never had any kidney problems until I had an emergency heart cath in late August of this year. Three days later I was admitted to ICU for congestive heart failure, blood clots in my lungs and hyponatermia. I was prescribed UREA and initially took the powder but have since ordered the caplets. I actually have to grind the pills up to make powder as they are too large to swallow. Do you order from amazon or the company? The company I use is a little cheaper than Amazon. Did your insurance pay for the UREA? I've paid out of pocket so far and it's not cheap. I had my doctor sign that it is medically necessary that I take it and I'll send statement and invoices to the insurance co. to see if they will respond favorably. I see my nephrologist tomorrow. My chemistry results from test on Wednesday are in normal range. However there is a test eGFR CKD-EPI is 53 and reference range should be greater thank 91. Also a test eCrCl shows results "NA." It should be 30-120. I look forward to hearing from you.

Forget to tell you I drink a high protein drink every day and take a
different Electroylete power that's called Dr Berg Electroylet.I also eat
protein bars during the day. When I spoke to Nephologist this morning he
told me to watch my BP as it has been high since I've been taking the Urea
tabs. I dont have a heart condition, diabetes and never had cancer and I
thank God for that. Just this sodium problem that I know of.

@maggie76 Hi Maggie. When I began with UREA I used the powder and I hated the taste even mixing it with various juices. I read that the company that makes it has pills and "they're smaller." I ordered them and was surprised how big they were. I'm afraid to try to swallow them. Didn't want them to get stuck in my throat. Soooo... I had to buy a pill grinder to turn them into powder. If you choose to do that, get a good quality one. I purchased mine from Amazon. About the BP. Mine runs low but that is because of my heart condition. I live near Montgomery, Alabama. Blessings to you.

Hi , As for the Urea Tabs and the size and the taste I don't have any problem swallowing them but when I first put them in my mouth I feel they taste terrible but once in my tummy, the taste is no longer there. So far so good. Am up to taking 6 of them per day working up to the 8. I'm happy to hear that they work. I too bought them on Amazon for $66.00 Going forward they will be expensive so lets hope I won't have to take the 8. Trial and error. I do find they are raising my BP and also make me tired. Nephrologist told me if I find my BP going up to call him ASAP. So far today my BP is normal. One day at a time. You sound like your doing great. Take good care.

I'm 83. I have been dealing with low electroyletes (low sodium) for 5 years. I have no serious illness except Osteoporosis Arthritis and low thyroid. I have been seeing a Nephrologist for about a yr and so far nothing is working. I was in hospital in 2024 for a sodium level 125. They gave me saline in a IV and brought it up to 133. Now it's back to 127. I'm taking UREA tabs.

@maggie76 what does your nephrologist think is the cause of your hypontremia. If you don’t know, please ask. Im a little confused. Is it just your sodium low or other electrolytes also? If so, which?

Would i be invading your privacy to ask for a list of your meds. I don’t think we need doses at this point

I have low sodium and as for medication for the low sodium I only take Urea tabs.
As for medications do you mean all the medications I take or just what I take for low sodium.

Hi Laura, As far as I know the low sodium is the only Electroylete problem
I have now. I take Urea tabs for it and i just went up from 127 to 129. As
for meds do you want to know all that I take?

As @laura1970 pointed out in the post 5 days ago (11/16?) hyponatremia (low sodium) can be associated with many things. I’ve only experienced this once in my life. I had been prescribed chlorthalidone for high blood pressure and it had a side effect of hyponatremia. My provider discontinued the med and switched me to something else. Problem solved. My mother also had hyponatremia of a more serious type and longer duration. She always had a fondness for water and drank copious amounts of it. She was in the hospital due to a broken leg and was consuming about 8 - 10 of those bedside carafes of water daily! Her sodium tanked! She was put on fluid restriction except for what was in the IV. A nephrologist was consulted and ordered up albumin by IV. It looked like egg white and had to be administered slowly. She also was having high blood pressure at the time and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. At one point she had orders for NPO (nothing by mouth). She eventually was moved to a SNF (skilled nursing facility / home) for rehab. It was a very long ordeal but she did make it home after relearning healthy eating /drinking and how to walk. She started refusing to eat and we had to coax her by any means possible (authorized by her providers). I got her to try eating salty snacks like chips and nuts. She liked cracking pistachios. My brother bribed her to take # bites of food and then showing her another photo of the grandkids. She was never prescribed UREA. This was over 25 years ago I think. At that time she did not have a diagnosis of any type of dementia but it became painfully obvious that hyponatremia messes with a person’s mental capacity (“can’t straight think”!)

I am so sorry your mother went thru such an awful experience. I too like
your mother used to drink lots of water. Don't anymore since I was told by
my GP it washes all the vitamins out of my system
I'm on 50 oz per day now. I have been doing a lot of research on
hyponatremia and I was eating sweet potato, spinach for Iron, Avocado
thinking this was good for me when I found out all 3 pull the sodium out of
the body. Little did I know. The Urea did bring my sodium level up 2 pts to
128, but it's making my BP go high even though I take BP medicine.
So what to do. Trial and error. Just hope the Nephologist knows what's
hrs doing.
Glad your feeling better. Take care.

@fdixon63 hello, good morning, when you were on the Urea tabs did you feel nauseous, or did your legs ever feel like they were being burnt. I also have high BP. Never had high before. Always had low. I do hope you are well and had a nice Thanksgiving.
