Continued Post-Nasal Drip and Constant Mucus in Throat

Posted by adominic @adominic, Mar 22, 2022

I was sick the last week or January/first week of February. Home Test-negative, rapid PCR-negative. All COVID symptoms and known prolonged exposure to infected individuals make me believe it was COVID. Since then, I have had a tremendously hard time dealing with post-nasal drip and mucus collecting in my throat. It is clear, sticky and almost impossible to remove from throat by coughing or clearing my throat. Flonase does nothing, allergy pills do nothing. Had anyone else had an issue like this post COVID? How long did it last? What did you do to cope? Small problem in comparison to others that post here, I realize.

@quickstepper thanks for replying. my ENT has recommended a sinus rinse. I'll admit I'm a bit scared to do it. I've read horror stories of people who use regular water and end up with nasty bacterial infections leading in some cases to death. I realize this isn't that, but I have become paranoid with all things health that can conspire to make my body even more miserable lol. I know I should try it.

You must use distilled purified water, available in all grocery and drug stores. You won’t have a problem, only relief.

I’ve been dealing with exactly the same problem postcovid for 3-1/2 years. No sprays help. Only relief is from saline nasal rinses and Benadryl for drying.

I have had long Covid symptoms for 2 years. Balance is off, fatigue, muscle aches, brain fog, and phlegm in my throat caused from constant post nasal drip.
Coughing to clear my lungs, and constant clearing of my throat when talking is what persists. I'm using NAC, a supplement and pseudoephedrine twice a day.
I recently went to a pulmonologist, who prescribed Trelegy inhaler once a day. After 14 days, I am clear, no cough, no phlegm. I have another 14 days to use the Trelegy inhaler, and a follow up appointment with breathing analysis next week. I feel better than I have in two years.
Blood work came back, and I am allergic to cats, dogs, dust and mold, none of which I am exposed to presently.
I hope this may be helpful to anyone who is still suffering.

Wow the change of allergies is really alarming.

I had COVID for the first time in 2024. I had had all shots and boosters.

I have been having similar symptoms since then. I take several different inhalers but was never recommended Trelegy. Is it a steroid?

See my earlier post. I had the same issue since January. ENT Dx: Chronic Neurogenic Cough / Throat Clear. After 1 week of treatments it’s gone. It was 4 months of agony with the mucus and constant cough.

@nahyduk what was the treatment that you used? I am very interested as I’ve been dealing with post nasal drip and phlegm in my throat for a year now and I’ve tried everything and seen every kind of doctor.

Have you discussed with your doctors food allergies and environmetal allergies?

What my ENT told me was allergies can change. What did not bother you in past can now bother you and vice versa. I was told by ENT and PCP that there is a nerve in throat. When irritated brain signals body to make mucus there and from the sinuses. So you can see the increase in phelm coming down from sinuses may be triggered by throat irritation.

I know I have severe sinus drainage that runs down my throat if I don't blow it out constantly. Thus you can see I am triggering more mucus to be made by irritating the nerve in my throat. My main issue with sinus drainage comes from 2 previous sinus surgeries where they opened up my sinus drainage holes. This stopped the constant sinus infections but created the overwhelming sinus drainage down my throat.

Both my ENT and my PCP stress using Azelatine nasal spray. It is to help with irritation in sinuses. It does seem to help. I also have been told to use saline rinses and saline sprays. I know sounds like added more liquid to sinus drainage but what it does is clean the sinuses from irritants.

I am going to have endoscopy in about a month (getting over an infection) to take a look at my eshophagus and to see if having silent reflux. I am being told my throat may be getting irritated from silent reflux and that would cause additional phelm and mucus to come into throat and from sinuses.

That never in throat I am told will signal brain to make more mucus to help with the irritation and it will come not only to throat but also signal sinuses to make more and thus more mucus coming down back of throat.

I followed up with pulmonary care, chest X-ray was normal. Rx Trelegy inhalant for 1 month along with a Medrol Dosepak (corticosteroid) then a breathing test which was normal. The constant coughing and drainage has subsided and I’m ever so grateful. The cough was lingering for almost 3 years and I was a nuisance to others. Hope this helps.

It’s been over three years since I had Covid and started this chaotic journey, and about 2 1/2 years since I came to this forum seeking help. I thought a couple times I was on my way to wellness but it didn’t happen, in fact it’s progressed. From the initial glob of phlegm in my throat I’ve continued to struggle and realized it’s all connected and all started after Covid: from sinuses, tinnitus, the gagging phlegm in my throat, asthma, allergies, GI problems as well as fatigue and dental problems from the extreme dryness. I may finally have some answers and a diagnosis. My primary’s leaning toward Sjogren’s Syndrome, or Disease, based on recent labs although Rheumatology will have to make the final diagnosis. The labs were ANA+ Titer 1:320; ssa 5.5. This is the second ANA+ result I’ve had, the first being immediately following the Covid infection; Rheumatology dismissed it as a fluke from the virus; but the first time the inflammatory marker, ssa, showed up ( range is 0-0.9). Three years of misery as a result.

@mimioto Mayo Clinic has a page for Sjogren's Syndrome also. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sjogrens-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20353216 As you progress with your treatments, please post updates. Is your Rheumatologist the doctor treating this disease or your primary? Thanks.
