Severe Constipation after small intestine surgery

Posted by bearose @bearose, Nov 12, 2025

I have IBS-C, but since I had emergency surgery to remove part of my small intestine in Sept., anything I tried is not effective: Linzess, Miralax, stool softeners, Citracel, Milk of Magnesia, tons of water, fiber, etc. Any suggestions? Going to see GI nurse practitioner next week.

@shaleenv olive oil definitely good for me— I don’t take it like a ned, just put it on some food.

@peterose hi, yes, blockage long gone, taken care of by moving up my CRC resection surgery…got it in time …the olive oil just a part of my diet that makes everything better… thanks to care with diet, I’m very rarely stopped up…eating apples and dried apricot definitely moves things naturally on a regular basis.

I’ve had numerous issues with a blocked bowel for years. I had surgery in May to loosen the scar tissue around it, but still have peridiodic issues. The ONLY product that has ever religiously worked for me when I’m constipated is Ex-Lax pills with lots of water. Senecot is a close second, but typically takes a day or so to work. I haven’t found a fiber supplement that works. I eat vegetables and fruits every day. Good luck to you.

Hello @mnlady51160, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Surgeries of the digestive tract often lead to other digestive problems, such as constipation or diarrhea. I want to invite you to a discussion group that could be helpful. Here is the link:

In this group, you will meet others who have discussed how they eat to avoid constipation, etc. You will learn about cooking methods, as well as the timing and quantities of foods that work well after surgery.

Do you tend to eat small, frequent meals?

So sorry to hear about your situation. Have you tried working with a GI doc?
I am going to see one next week.
Right now, the only thing that work for me is Ducolax and Fleets enemas.

@crystalena sorry, I don’t know if Ducosate is the same as Dulccolax…probably could google that… water is so important !…while bacon is tasty, it can be hard on the body—saturated fat and usually unwanted chemicals- my GI docs/cancer team forbid bacon and hot dogs, salami, etc…. When I get phlegm, I just drink water or tea with lemon….if one needs frequent laxative help, go as gentle /natural as possible with laxatives ( some are harsh, not good long term)—doc or NP/PA should be able to advise for your situation/dietary needs. Good luck !

Olive oil. I take a teaspoon a day. I had a blockage due to adhesions from previous surgeries last December. I was using miralax daily for a couple months and was worried about the long term effects. Research olive oil for this. There have been studies. Since using a teaspoon a day of olive oil I only have needed the miralax maybe 2 times in several months. I also met with the nutritionist at Mayo to help me learn a safe diet and slowly introduce certain foods again. Good luck.

You're very welcome. I thought it was weird when a friend told me about it so I researched, found studies and then talked to my nutritionist at Mayo and she said she had heard about it as well and told me it wouldn't hurt me to try it. Soni did and I am so happy I did. I wish you all the luck

Hi hopeful. Yes I do tend to eat smaller meals to ease any issues that might arise. I’ve seen quite a few GI Drs rhrough the years and my blockages are caused by various scar tissue lesions left behind from other unrelated surgeries. I will definitely take a look at the support group! Thank you!

@nycmusic, I have found that a spoonful of olive oil in my morning coffee is very helpful as well.
