Severe Constipation

Posted by klk464 @klk464, Feb 28, 2018

I have had severe constipation for a long time. I drink lots of water and have had almost every test possible done and tried many prescription medications. These medications work for a little bit then stop. I currently take 3 docusate in morning and at night I will take 2 senna/docusate. I still dont have a daily BM. So i get bloated crampy and back pain from this.

I was told I could go to the Mayo Clinic as they may have ideas for me because they are out of options for me here.

Anyone else suffer from this?

I’ve struggled with this most of my life too. For about 20 years I’ve done colonics because not emptying properly used to make me feel awful (I’d even get sore throats and a cough from it). More recently, focusing on gut balance - with things like prebiotics, digestive enzymes, and probiotics - has made a big difference. I also walk daily, stay on top of hydration, and take magnesium glycinate gummies. Everyone’s body is different, but finding the right combo has really helped me.

I've had severe constipation since my doctor put me on Lercanidipine for high blood pressure. I don't think I'd had constipation more than a couple of times before that, I used to suffer from the opposite problem. I feel your pain - and only other sufferes can know how awful it can be. Here are some of the things which have helped me. Making sure I drink at least 6 pints of liquid a day. I'm British and have a huge mug for tea now, which holds 1.5 pints - that helps! I also make sure I have water with me wherever I go. Porridge can help or stewed apple, both have soluble fibre. Organic live yoghurt. People have recommended to me the surround for the toilet that gets your knees up so that you are basically squatting. Often with an ordinary loo you are having to overcome kinks in the bowel caused by your position - having a stool, surround or just packs of loo paper to raise your knees can make all the difference. I keep a diary to keep track because often it is hard to remember in a busy week when you last went. If it's been a couple of days I take docusate or lactulose. It helps to follow those with liquid because that's how stool softeners work - they draw liquid into the bowel.

Hi… yes, the “stool.” I bought the Squatty Potty” a few years ago and I use it every day when ( I hope) it’s time for a bm. The Squatty Potty is not that big, so it can be put aside against a bathroom wall when done using . The company has a website…it may be available at Amazon as well ( not sure).

@anniewee This has been a game changer for me! To the point that I fear using a bathroom without one! Made me see how humans have really neglected the original way we’re supposed to position ourselves for best ‘evacuation’!

@spower112000liverpoo so sorry for your pain, it really does hurt…don’t know if this will help, but when my ‘biz’ was longer and skinny, I contacted my team a lot…docs did imaging pronto…it was due to a developing blockage, potentially serious…my surgery for CRC was moved up quickly, before it could perforate…Get in touch with a gastro before it gets worse.. wishing you relief !
